Elevated blood glucose in non diabetic

I am not diabetic but I had my blood glucose level (complete metabolic panel) done early Saturday morning in the ER after fainting due to the flu. Beforehand I had not eaten and only drank about 3/4 cup of coffee with 1 tsp xylitol/stevia and 1 tbsp half and half. Could this little bit of coffee caused my sugar to be up some? I was taking sudafed and had taken cough medicine before bed. My level was 112, which I know is not super high but normal is 70-100.
I have relatives with diabetes and most of my babies were between 10-12# at birth so I know I have an increased risk of developing diabetes. I have lost 90# over the last 4 years but still have 10 more to go. I eat a low carb diet and do cardio 4-5 days a week. I emailed my doctor who said we should keep an eye on it and for me to eat low carb, but I am already doing that. I am wondering if being sick could play a part in the increased levels too or maybe the coffee above is the reason? I am open to suggestions.

Hi Jean and welcome! No, I don't think it was the coffee but probably other reasons. First, sorry to hear you were so sick and I hope you're feeling better!

Stress, sickness, certain medications, certain food and drink, fasting for a long time, etc. can all make our blood sugar rise so it's not just having diabetes than can do it.

Coffee itself will not. Half and half has some carbs but you said it was only a teaspoon so that shouldn't have had too much effect. Check the cough syrup label. That's notorious for having added sugar unless it's sugar-free.

With diabetes in the family, being overweight and having babies over 10 lbs sometimes are sometimes associated with being diabetic so this is something you have to monitor. The best thing to do is start with your own doctor and get blood sugar meter if you don't' already have one. Keep a food/blood sugar log to show him/her. In my own experience, my blood sugar hovered for years around 110 fasting. I wish that I had known then what I know now - that catching it before it started to rise would have given me more control over the blood sugar.

In any case, since you're eating low carb already, you know that carbs will raise your blood sugar. Please read the link in my signature below for more info on blood sugar.

Thanks for the reply! I plan to get a blood sugar monitor and start testing myself to keep an eye on it. I will aslop start keeping a food log. I appreciate the help!

Hi again. I owe many things to my family, some good and some not so good like health issues. Diabetes runs in my mother's side and now my brother and sister and I all have diabetes (and high blood pressure) so it was probably inevitable. But today we have a lot more resources at our fingertip than the prior generations did. Also we know more about diet and how it affects blood sugar. So, we have to be our own advocates, learning all we can and doing what we can to follow a healthy low-carb diet.

By low-carb I don't mean keto or other diets. My own food plan is "low carb" but not high protein or high fat. I eat a piece of protein (chicken, meat, fish) and vegetables (but no potatoes) and greens, eggs, cheese, peanut butter, small amount of yogurt and small amount of berries. Still, people may react differently to the same food and this is why we need to keep a food diary. Also be aware that the guidelines for blood sugar targets put out by the Diabetes Association are very high, too high in fact and following them will keep blood sugar extremely elevated.

Hope you can get this resolved. By the way, the only test to check for diabetes is the GTT, Glucose Tolerance Test.

Yep gtt is the one.
Yep bgl can actually rise when ya crook...and as stated even over the counter stuff can increase them.

I encourage you learn the g.i. doc may consider a hba1c.
