I was diagnosed prediabetic last fall. I worked hard , dropped the A1c down to 5.7 , lost 20 pounds. I suffer with insomnia, and know the nights when my sleep is the worst my glucose will be up in the morning. I am considering asking my Dr. to prescribe a CGM so I can monitor my glucose more closely . I have read about them, spoken to one person who has one , but would love to hear how others feel about them . Pros and cons.

Hi Joanna and welcome to HealingWell. I don't have a continuous blood glucose meter. These are by prescription and I thought were usually for type 1 diabetics.

You need to talk this over with your doctor if you have a special need. In the meantime, I think you did really well bringing your A1c down (although I don't know what it originally was) and that you lost 20 lbs. Please read the hot link in my signature for more information about blood sugar. I would also recommend Dr. Richard Bernstein's book Diabetes Solution for complete information on blood sugar, meds, exercise and food.

I haven’t been on in a while (mostly on Prostate Cancer forum) but I thought I would reply to this thread as I have had a GCM for about 4 years for non-diabetic hypoglycemia. My A1C is great, I just have random drop outs of my glucose. After a couple of years of that, I got hypoglycemic unawareness and so my endocrinologist recommended the Dexcom G6. Mainly because she thought the technology was better and my wife could assist in “watching” over me since it will alert her also. There was a slight struggle to get it at first but my doc wrote a justification letter and blue shield approved it. I used to get them straight from Dexcom, but they stopped direct sales at the beginning of the year. The copay was reasonable back then, $105 for 3 three pack sensors. But since they outsourced it has gone to over $100 per pack. And the 90 day transmitters are about $300 each. Crazy markup from the new supplier. I am unfamiliar with the other GCMs out there that seem to be more cost effective and easier to get through your insurance provider.

I have come to rely on it and deal with my drops before I get too low. I take action around 65 as I drop to low 30s within minutes of that alarm. You have to get used to where you put it. A couple of times I seem to have hit a vein and blood just kept coming out and I had to request a replacement, which Dexcom did replace each time.

You may have already got it, but if you didn’t, maybe this will help. Take care. -JR

Thanks for your reply, CaliJR. That's interesting information and not a surprising experience with the suppliers. Normally insurers would cover the continuous monitor for type 1 diabetics but there are certainly other reasons like chronic hypo episodes.

I hope you're doing well. Thanks for posting!
