My husband is taking 4 metformin daily.
Talk to your dr when you get your A1C done again.

My husband has a higher bs some mornings - into the 9’s.
Sometimes he eats later in the evening - and his bs rises by morning.

Hi Cilly and welcome back. I'm sorry to read that your blood sugar numbers are too high. First of all, what does your doctor say? Having a 9.1 A1c means the blood sugar is out of control and dangerous and should be brought down immediately. You cannot wait three months. If that is what your doctor says, then please get another doctor. A1c tests should not be above 6.0 or the patient risks health complications.

Two metformin a day is actually considered entry-level to diabetes or for pre-diabetics to control elevated blood sugar.

What have you been eating? I'm glad you posted.

True, the 9-plus A1c is high. However, there is no need to panic and "find another doctor" immediately. We should all know that doctors have treatment strategies. And one-or-two sentence blurbs on a message froum board cannot tell the whole story.

Yes, I would act to inform your treating MD.

Wishing you the best.

Thank you for posting NJ Fred but I stand by my post. An A1c is equivalent to about 214 as a blood sugar average and this is high enough to damage several organs over time. Having to wait for three months to see the doctor again while knowing that the A1c is at 9.1 makes NO sense at all. Would a person do the same if his blood pressure reading were exceedingly high - wait for three months to see the doctor? Nope.

I asked Cilly what her doctor thinks about this and she has not replied. And we don't know what she's been eating. Of course there may be other issues but the immediate problem is the blood sugar which is unacceptable.

Please read the link in my signature to learn more about how blood sugar affects our hearts, eyes, kidney, circulation and nerves.

NJFred, I see you usually post in the Prostrate Cancer forum. Do you have any personal experience with diabetes?

An A1C over 9 should, as Lanie says, not be allowed to hover that high for 3 months after discovery!

Cilly, Please update us with what your Dr has said! I am hoping you are also adjusting your food and exercise to get that number down before permanent damage is done!

Lynnwood,

I have been Type 2 for almost 25 years. A1c has been as high as 11.2 but is currently 6.7. I have a trusted Endo whom I've been seeing for almost 12 years. He has tweaked my meds several times over the years. I currently inject 60units of Tresiba and bolster it with 10mg of Farxiga - - Farxiga is what caused my A1c to nosedive. I am a soda drinker and adore regular soda all washed down with Italian ices. Am I foolhardy? I don't think so, and could give a hoot what anybody else thinks. I made my choices and am content. It is my life.

I am well-familiar with Type 2. Furthermore, I also am a firm believer that oftentimes well-intentioned people who take to online arenas go far beyond what is safe, and"doctor-hopping" can be dangerous. Especially when the suggestion is spoken without knowing the WHOLE STORY. And those who so much as suggest it often go beyond what is reasonable. Second opinions, perhaps. But don't endow yourself with credentials you have not earned and licenses and certifications that do not adorn your walls, and leave the "slap in the face" to qualified people.

It is beneficial to underscore the long-term impact of diabetes, no sane person would deny that truth. Accurate information is invaluable. It is wise for a diabetic to weigh everything and then make a life choice. Some are incorrigible. Others overreact.

It is not at-issue that the ravages of some diseases are irreversible. Diabetes, kidneys, et al. Again, pointing this out is a neighborly thing to do. You also should point out that these affects build over substantial periods of time. And while the aforementioned ailments might not, at present, be curable - - they can be stabilized via some of the newer medications on the market.

And as Moderators and posters should respect the opinions of others posted in what is heralded as a free-and-open exchange - let's leave the doctoring to the doctors, shall we?

For the record - I am not an MD. If anybody else posting herein is, it behooves them to simply say so.

NJ Fred

NJFred, 'twas a question, not an accusation., nor did I contest what you said. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. That's what HW is about.... shared experiences! Thanks.
