Just began on Byetta one week ago today. The nurse practitioner who set me up with the Byetta knew next to nothing about Byetta but was open to information and took notes hopefully to help other patients that may follow. She had told me that Byetta once opened does not need to be refrigerated! I had read all the information in the Byetta package which of course says the opposite. I called the 800 number on the Byetta site and a representative told me that Byetta can be stored at room temperature for up to 144 hours (6 days) at a time but cautioned me to not lay it up against ice since this was how I planned to carry it from place to place. Of course the literature does warn not to freeze Byetta.

I also asked the Byetta representative if I ate 6 small meals a day or had one or two snacks in between meals, how long before I could take my evening shot since I may have had a snack three hours earlier than my evening meal . She said that the biggest concern with taking your shot after a meal is low blood glucose levels. I hadn't heard that before but had seen on another site a man who took his morning Byetta shot before his meal and his evening shot after his evening meal. Any thoughts on this.

I have not had any nausea or real loss of appetite or for that matter any weight loss but was told by the nurse practitioner that Byetta does have an accumulative effect so this will possibly come about but that everyone reacts differently.

The incredible news is that my blood glucose levels are now in the low to mid 80's during the day and I have already reduced my Glyburide from 2.5 mg in the morning to 1.25. I also take 4 mg Avandia 2 times a day.

I added some stuff to your subject so you will get responses faster- Jeannie

Hi Bab,

1ST, on transporting your Byetta. Ice (frozen gel pacs) last a good long time and are a good way to transport your Byetta so you may want to do what I do.  I save the original box and plastic holder that the pen comes in and thats how I store it in the fridge.  When I transport the Byetta, I put the box in a thermal container with a frozen ice/gel pack.  The cardboard of the  box and the plastic carrier that holds the pen act as a good enough buffer that the Byetta won't freeze or get too cold,  but by using an "ice pack" I can get much more than the 4 hours that the Byetta travel pack is good for!

I have missed a bunch of meals and always taken my Byetta after to no ill effect.  I think the composition of the meal really dictates how low you can/will go.  Steak and salad can send me into the 50's if I don't cut back on my oral's prior to the meal, while a hamburger with fries will not have nearly the same effect as the fries and greasy hamburger work to keep your BS high!  So I guess my answer is, I'd rather have the Byetta post meal than not at all and deal with an occasional bout of low BS when and if it happens. (don't make a habbit of post meal medication, but once in a while isn't gonna upset the applecart).

BTW..mid 80's are spectacular numbers!

I can only please one person per day, today is not your day...tomorrow doesn't look good either.
