I'v been struggling with migraines for about three years now and have recently been experiencing strange feelings. The only way to describe them is temporary confusion, lasting only about ten to fifteen seconds. I've been told it's called aura, but it almost sounds like the same symptoms as hypoglycemia, only less severe. Are there similiar symptoms to hyperglycemia? I've never been tested for diabetes, but my wife works in a pharmacy and insisted that i check my blood sugar, so i did. about an hour after eating it was 177. I'm 5 feet 8 inches, two hundred pounds. Is this level average? (i know i'm overweight!!) Should I be concerned enough to question my doctor about testing me for diabetes? I also plan to check again in the morning to see if after 12 hours without eating or drinking anything if it's any lower. any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The fasting test will tell you a lot more. Being over-weight is a risk factor. You already know that.

I don't think you get a lot of symptoms with hyperglycemis. Some probably do, I do read that every so often. But, people don't have the same was of knowing about highs as they do lows. Of course, there are many that will say that they do have symptoms, and I don't doubt that. It is just not as typical like a hypo reactions are and not dangerous like lows.

Tell us what your fasting test comes back. The one hour after eating does not say enough.

What you should see is a number between 65 and 99. Some will say a little different, but if you come back a little over that does not change anything. The standard for diabetes(type 2) is over 125 fasting. If you fall in the high end of 100 to 125 then look at the possibility of pre-diabetes....

Checked this morning after fasting, and it was 95.

Hi Brad,

going by your fasting value, you are not a diabetic!I have read that in over-weight people the insulin resistance is high and a test called the oral glucose tolerance test or OGTT will unmask underlying diabetes.so there is no harm in going in for this test.In fact these days my doctor calls any fasting value above 90mgs as "HIGH-NORMAL"and advises an OGTT. :-)

Brad,
I'd go with the 'aura' dx before I would the diabetes thing... Being dx with DM can cause some real headaches later on. It makes it more difficult to get health insurance, life insurance and can be a bit of a problem. I have a condition that is called pre-migraine where I get the glowing sparklie aura in my field of vision but don't get the headache later. You may need to be on some migraine meds...

Hypoglycemia is a bit more profound.... It can lead to a 'falling down a well' feeling and almost a panic attack until some fruit juice or candy is found and consumed. If I were you (and I'm not a doctor so I can't diagnose) I'd follow the migraine trail and get that treated... And before you are diagnosed with diabetes you can start following an exercise/ food plan to sort of 'head it off at the pass' before it gets problematic. One thing is for sure, once you are diagnosed you will be doing the food plan exercise thing anyway. Might as well start now and maybe prevent the whole durn'ed mess.

I have been taking preventative medication daily for migraines for about a year.(Innopran XL) I also take Relpax when a migraine occurs. It works, but I'm a Zombie afterwards.

Anyways, back to the Diabetes. I never really thought maybe I had it until I started researching, but anyways it looks like I'm O.K. . Thanks Goodness !

One more ? and I'm gone, what exactly does it mean when I'm all over the board when I test myself. I'm up around 200 or so after eating, but back to normal (under 100) after fasting. Is this normal ?

Your body releases insulin to help the glucose slip thru the cell membranes and into the mitochondria of your cells where energy production takes place. Depending upon your carb load from the meal and when you test your blood - it takes a bit of time for the insulin to mop up all the available glucose and get it moved into the cells. If you test about an hour after eating your bg will be high. Two hours later it should be about 110. That's because you're 'normal'. So... get your wonderful 'normal' fanny out of here and back over to the migraine/headache forum where you belong before we all get jealous of your numbers! (Jeannie is pushing Brad out the door and down the hall to the migraine/headach forum room.)
