My Father has been diagnosed with high levels of ammonia. His doctor has him on Laculose to help cleanse his system and has banned all red meat. More problems are Severe degenerative bone disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and chronic arthuritis. Due to the lack of excercise because of pain his wieght went from 175 to 350. It is so bad he can only walk a few feet with help. Before the ammonia diagnosis he showed several signs of alzhiemers. Luckily he is now as clear headed as ever. He has tried Byeta to no availe. He not only suffered from nausea but severe dry heaves and couldn't keep anything down.

My question is are there any natural or other remedies that could help lower the level of ammonia? Any foods that help lower ammonia levels? I would also like to know of foods to avoid that may raise the ammonia level.

Thanks ahead of time for your attention.

Your father has a very serious disorder. I found a site that discusses Hyperammonemia but the outlook is not very promising for your dad's health. I'm sorry I can't offer a more cheerful answer but this does not look like a very good disease process. The laculose is often used to induce diarrhea in patients with liver failure.

The foods that are going to cause him problems include all high protein foods so he needs to speak with someone who can help amend his food plan to be the best one for him. His doctor may want him to see a registered dietician to discuss the foods that affect his condition...

Wish I could be more helpful...

Thank you Jeannie for your reply. The doc did say he would be on laculose for the rest of his life. It does have its downside as far as taking him anywhere like doctor visits and to Church as he needs to go at least once an hour. I will check out the link you provided. maybe it will be some help. We have pretty much resigned ourself that this is something we will have to put up with for as long as he lives.

Thanks again, Joe.
