Hi everyone.  I'm new here, I'm 63, type 2, been on Metformin for a while.  My last A1C was 6.5.   My big question is:  Are chills associated with diabetes?   I've had them on and off for years, I can get on while under an electric blanket, sitting reading, after eating, etc.  No rhyme or reason to them.   Can someone please tell me if this is related to D???  thanks, and I'm glad to be here!

Hi ack,

Chills may be part of an overall circulatory problem that may be part of diabetes. Something that can be done to help stop the progression of the disease may also help with your chills. One of the best things you can do is exercise your large muscles by walking, lifting light arm weights or walking stairs (if your doc has ok'd you for these activities). When you use the large muscles in your legs and arms they contract and relax causing a massaging of the veins throughout the muscle. This massage of the veins actually enhances venous blood flow back to the heart and helps your whole circulatory system work more efficiently. It also helps delay the onset of valve collapse in the blood vessels which can lead to varicose veins.

Please be especially careful with the use of electric blankets. Decreased circulation can lead to nerve damage in the feet and you may not feel that the blanket is too hot for your extremities. Try to always use the blanket on it's lowest comfortable setting and check your feet for redness.

Yours may be one of them...
