I usually post at the anxiety board
Ive been on the atkins diet for 4 years and its the diet for me, I dont say its for everyone but it works for me
no it hasnt rotted my kidneys, that was only ever an old wives tale
before starting atkins I had struggled with several diets including GI, none of which would keep my weight down, I was badly overweight and taking the max allowable of 3 different diabetes meds, blood sugar was still too high and I was facing having to inject insulin, diabetes specialists told me this would be difficult due to my binge eating but none suggested I try atkins
due to an unexplained high level of protien in my urine, apparently inherited, I had a kidney specialist who continues to assure me that atkins is doing kidneys no harm at all
atkins hasnt always been easy for me, I have to go back to the induction stage about every 6 months to get the weight and blood sugar levels back down, seems I will be like this for life, I manage OK on a midrange dose of metformin
ironically, I now eat more food that I ever did before, lots of meat, with the fat, cheese, eggs, cream  etc, if atkins was going to kill me, as some warned, it would have done so by now
for anyone starting atkins, you need to take lots of fiber while your body adjusts, otherwise the constipication can be severe
if addicted to choclate, you can still get the taste from cocoa powder, as a drink or mixed with whipped cream as an example

I agree with you, Harry.
I only got round to reading the book a few weeks ago and it makes complete sense to me. The only surprising thing about it is the hostility with which it was, and still is met. I'd found his principles to be true quite independently while trying to experiment on myself many years ago. There's also a great deal of scientific evidence to support it too, of course, which always helps.
My weight is normal now, my blood lipids are great and, like you, I still had my kidneys the last time I checked.
All the best,
