I am new to this forum. I have been diabetic for 7 years. I tried several different meds. and could not take any of them. I researched herbal, vitamin and mineral supplements and have had great success.
My A1c couple weeks ago was 5.9. All other blood work was perfect. I also saw a homepathic doctor about 6 months ago and he provided some valuable information along with adding a few supplements that he thought would give me better control and build up my immune system.
At present time, I feel as good as I ever have in my life. I am curious if there are others that have been on herbal remedies/alterntive treatments that are having good results.
Look forward to your replies

Hi Andrew,

Welcome to HealingWell. Lots of people with many ideas to exchange here along with support when we get off track with our program for optimum blood sugars. Some of our peeps are working this with diet and exercise alone, some are on Gila Monster spit, some are on multiple meds, and some are insuiin dependent Type1's. We just kind of help each other.

I have been successful with herbals, vitamins and minerals in other parts of my health maintenance but I trust my diabetes to metformin, diet and exercise.

I use malic acid and magnesium to help maintain energy with my fibromyalgia.
I use evening primrose to help with my female symptoms.
I use flax seed oil and fish oil to raise my HDL's.
I use a multivitamin that is low in iron because I'm over 50.
I take an aspirin every day to help prevent heart attack and stroke.
I take Vitamin B complex to help with my nervous system health.
And finally, I take vitamin E two times a week (not more!) to help with heart health.

I researched and added these items one by one with the approval of my regular doctor with the exception of the evening primose which was prescribed by a specialist. Most of my add-ins came from reading medical journal articles and news releases.

If you don't mind my asking, what stuff do you use to help maintain your health? What food plan do you use? And the bugaboo question we all dislike... What exercise regimen are you following? Glad to make a new friend on HW but sorry for the reason of diabetes. Again, welcome.

Let me add my welcome to Jeannie's. You have stumbled on to a great community! Everyone here loves to share info about how they control their diabetes as well as other afflictions, so please share what you have learned over your 7 years. I've been diagnosed for 11 years and struggled to figure out how to control this insidious little monster, but it wasn't until I came here that I really found some good advice.

With me, I have found diet is the key. I was on glucovance and actos. After about 5 years on the actos started to have trouble with edema, so the doc took me off that and we tried the byetta this summer. The low dosage did nothing and the high made me very ill. Now I am on metformin and Januvia to see how that combo works. But the thing I did on my own, was cutting out the carbs in my diet. I started that seriously in August and all my numbers have come down, and I'm losing weight. Still working on that pesky exercise thing.

I do take about 1/2 tsp. of cinnamon a day and a diabetic nutrition pack that has chromium, selenium, a multi-vitamin with lutein, folic acid, alpha lipoic acid/green tea, and vitamin C. I told my doc I was taking this and she basically just shrugged her shoulders and said whatever. I would be really interested in knowing what you are taking. What I have come to find out on this forum, is that everyone's body works a little differently and we all have to experiment until we find what works for us.

Again, welcome, and keep us informed. :)
