I have a question about temporal lobe seizures. My husband has some mental problems and I was talking to my therapist the other day and she suggested that I look into seeing if my husband might have Temporal Lobe Seizures. He's been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, PTSD and Brain Damage. The main reason I think he could possibly have these kinds of seizures is that he describes some very unusual feelings from time to time. I have been trying to read about what the symptoms are like and what a seizure actually feels like and it seems that they are very different from person to person.
My husband would obviously be better to describe what he is feeling but I am going to do my best. He's described smelling something burning that wasn't there before, he complains of headaches all the time and he's told me several times before that he feels shocks in his brain, like electricity shocks that last for a couple of minutes. I am not with him throughout the day however a lot of our problems with each other have to do with him having racing and obsessive thoughts that just all of a sudden come on, like a rush of emotion that is very overwhelming for him. He said it's like flashes of upsetting memories or pictures. I do know that he occasionally sees things and he has tinnitus (ringing in his ears) from time to time as well. He also has times where his leg and arm muscles will twitch or spasm but never at the same time. He has Deja Vu all the time, but I have noticed that it is when he is stressed out and out in public when he has the Deja Vu the most. I don't know how all of this plays out though. He said he will feel the electrical shocks in his brain and then the emotions will come on strong. The thing is sometimes he will calm down quickly and sometimes it will take him several hours to calm down. Sometimes something triggers it and sometimes he will just pick a fight with me out of nowhere. He does occasionally black out and it is when he has his most erratic behavior. I have thought that this was from his PTSD, but I read something that said PTSD symptoms could be triggered with people who have TLE. He's also said that he disassociates and feels like he is in a dream like state, usually not clearly remembering or not remembering at all what happened but he is very clearly alert and usually very volatile and mean during these times.
Could any of you give me some insight? One thing that stood out to me was that my husband uses Marijuana to calm his symptoms in general and it works really well. He doesn't tolerate medications well. However when he runs out it's pretty much a nightmare to be around him. From Obsessive thinking to paranoia to the weird sensations he has in his brain and the rest of his body. He complains of back and neck aches, a rising feeling in his stomach or acid reflux, the muscle spasms, headaches, shaking, tinnitus and the hallucinations or delusions. He's told me he's seen flashes of light before too. I sort of thought he was making this stuff up because none of it really makes sense.
When you have a seizure do you have all these symptoms at once? Because his don't seem to happen all together besides the rush of emotions. He does have a brain injury, he had neuropsychological testing done but never an EEG. He's been doing EMDR therapy to help with the PTSD and it seems to send his brain into overdrive so he's stopped it because it's too much for him to deal with. My therapist said someone with seizures might have a reaction like that since the brain is being stimulated.
