Hey everyone-
I have been having severe face pain. Specifically on left side of face. it's a burning pain and sometimes shoots thru my face to my ear.  I do NOT have anything wrong with my ear. Dr's know that. They have diagnosed me with Trigeminal Neuralgia (please look up if you have not heard of it to learn more). Hopefully some of you already have heard of this. Anyway, I see a Neurologist this week. I am SO WORRIED b/c this seems so crazy! The pain is UNREAL!
I have had FM for about 4 years now. Does anyone else know much about face pain and Fibro???
Thanks all! :)

I often have severe face pain - including my EYEBROW (usually only on one side) as well as my ear and behind my ear. I also get electric-shock kind of pain on the side of my head (where I know there are muscles and nerves).

about 10 years ago I had REALLY bad face pain and it turned out to be a horrible infection that went through my sinuses and my top teeth. I had a dentist drain it through one tooth - where I had a root canal later but I ended up losing the tooth. My whole head swelled up and it looked really scary.

Anywya, my point is - make sure you get a good diagnosis of the face pain. But now that I have fibromyalgia I still get severe face pain too.
I have fibromyalgia ~ nothing else that I know of! I'm very humbled by reading all of your signatures - gosh - many of you suffer with so much more than me!

I had the same thing last year.  It turned out to be TMJ...I don't know if you notice your jaw clicking and locking, but the pain is unreal....a burning that went into my ears and up the side of my head.  My nose also ached.  The only thing that relieved it was massage.  It's just a suggestion and not trying to dx you.  Thought it might be a possibilty.

Hi Julie!

I'm so sorry you are suffering like this. Like so many who live with debilitating pain...it just isn't fair! But fair or not there is good treatment out there if it is TN. I did some reading like you suggested and it was mighty interesting. This syndrome affects the 5th cranial nerve which branches out across the face...hence the pain from the scalp down into the jaw. How miserable! Several years ago I had Bell's Palsy which affects the 7th cranial nerve. I was interested in which facial nerve caused your TN since I had a facial nerve issue once. At least mine wasn't painful and I did recover in a few months.

The prognosis looks a bit bleak if you read some of the stuff online but there is also some very promising treatment out there from ice and heat packs, medications, to new and effective surgeries. Even some non-traditional therapies can help.

I only have a couple of thoughts to share...1st off ~ try to relax. I know...relax when you are in pain and terrified. Easy for me to say but darn hard to do. But stress and worry will only increase the pain. Maybe try heat or ice packs if you haven't...but I'm guessing you have already tried those. I would definitely make sure of your diagnosis since it's a hard one to pin down. But you are going to a specialist and if it's confirmed and you are comfortable with what you are hearing then put your trust in them and let them do what they can to help. If you aren't comfortable with the dx the get another opinion and/or change doctors. You'll know if your medical team is the right one for you.

Please keep in touch...ok?

Hi Julie: Back about three weeks ago I had excruciating pain on the left side of my face. I was totally baffled. It began in the lower jaw, where there is no tooth, as it was removed about ten years back, it began as a rumbling kind of pain. Like a drumbeat. Then it would shoot up into my upper jaw like someone stuck a hot skewer into the upper jaw. It was totally, unbearable. All I could do was sleep as I waited to see a dentist. They took x-rays and said there was nothing there. Then she (dentist), put some kind of mirror in my mouth and found a fractured tooth, split right in two, it was a molar closely connected to the sinus. She warned me that it would come out in pieces and I was running the risk of having a piece of tooth penetrate my sinus which would require immediate surgery. I said "get it out". I could not envision going forward in that degree of pain. The whole thing was resolved once she got it out. However, I do get a pounding in my right temple about three times a week. I take a migraine medicine (Zomig) for that. When I have excruciating pain in my temple and face sometimes I take a smaller dose of amyltriptilene, ie. 25mgs. and lie down. It generally passes in about two hours. Good luck. My mom has TMJ.

Hi everyone!
Thank you so much for all the replies! It helps me so much to know all of you are here!!
I see the Neurologist on Tues.  I will keep all of you posted as to what i find out. Even my Mom suggested I make sure to get a second opinion just to be SURE.  I have had many dr's over the course of the years tell me different thing after different thing and on and on and on...... I am sure most of you know exactly what I mean!
I am sorry so many of you go thru some sort of facial pain as well. It's very frustrating to live this way!
Thank all of you for your help, advice and compassion!
