I have a friend that is a member of another fibro forum and she directed me to the site this morning so I could read a few posts concerning Fibro-mites using Enbrel.  Jeez...they all claim 'They Are Healed!'  Isn't that for auto immune disorders like RA?  My dad was on it for RA and it DID help with the pain and progression but within one year of using it, he developed two forms of rare cancers and tested positve for TB.  MY DIL is on it for a type of arthritis that comes from psoriosis and it has helped her immensely.
I guess it just made me wonder if these people were really helped by the drug, if fibro is truly an auto immune disorder...I might be misinformed but I didn't think it was.
Those drugs like Enbrel scare me, even though they are lifesavers for many.  My dad couldn't even pick up a fork so he weighed the benefits against the dangerous side effects and decided to go for it.
Just wondering if any of your rhuemy's have ever suggested it.
Oh, by the way, one of the posts read that because it has not yet been approved by the FDA for Fibro, it isn't covered by insurance and it costs $1500 a month!

Hi Donna,

I had not heard of enbrel until you posted about it. Thank you for the information. I wonder if it really works or if people just think so. It would be wonderful if it did. But I imagine that a person would have to continue injections forever. Let us know if you get anymore information on it.

Donna, it is used for rheumatoid arthritis and joint inflammation and some skin problems associated with arthritis.  People with fibro do not have joint inflammation.  We don't get damage to the joints...it just feels that way.
People can have fibro and rheumatoid arthritis and they also can be misdiagnosed.  We "fight" this on the forum frequently...people with "cures" for fibro.  Unfortunately there is none at this time.  If Enbrel really helped fibromyalgia the doctors would be prescribing it like they are doing with Lyrica.  If the FDA hasn't approved it for fibro there may be a reason, too.
I can't tell you how many times I have heard of people being "healed" of fibromyalgia!  It just builds up false hope.  I'm sure we will be the first to find out if a medication is developed that will help us.  And, what works for one doesn't necessarily work for another with fibro.

Sherrine: You bring up a point that I am going to re-visit with my rheumy this Friday:

Last appt, I mentioned that I had some inflammation and my GP had Rx'd me a water pill to try to take it down a bit.

My rheumy told me that he does in fact see some fibro patients that have inflammation. Now, what I want to know is, do these people also have arthritis?

What he said flys in the face of everything I've read about inflammation and fibro.
Still learning how to manage my Fibromylagia, and all the lovely gifts it brings.
I had severe spinal stenosis, had fusion done on C5-7, and my life has changed.

Donna, my dad took Enbrel for RA, too. It did him a lot of good toward the end. Diane

I know if I asked either my GP or rheumy for enbrel to see if it helped my fibro I would get a big fat "NO" and "are you out of your mind" out of both of them so what kind of doctors are these people going to that they are rxing enbrel for fibro??? My rheumy said he wouldn't even recommend lyrica for me cause my pain is not bad enough to out weigh the side effects. I was happy to hear that cause I didn't want him pushing it on me.
I do believe in the placebo effect so if someone wants to give a sugar pill a fancy name and tell me it works I will take it, hehehe.
luv and hugs
