Hi there,
I'm brand new to this site. I'm a 31 year old mother of 2 boys with no health issues except for mild anxiety.  For the past week, I have been experiencing muscle spasms (almost like braxton hicks contractions) in my abdominal area.  It's not internal, like in my stomach just on the surface muscles.  They are all around my upper abdomen on both sides and sometimes under my rib cage.  They are not severe but more annoying and sometimes a little painful.  They don't go away completely but come and go every few minutes.  I've been to urgent care and to visit my doctor and they both said there is no signs of a mass or anything else.  I have no other symptoms and I feel fine other than these spasms.  At first they almost felt like flutters of a baby kicking...and no I'm currently on my period so I'm not pregnant.  I also had blood tests done to check my electrolytes and iron, thyroid and blood count. ..everything came back normal.  Doctor said it could also be a muscle strain but I don't remember doing anything strenuous and other than the result of the spasms, there is not soreness.  It's only sore because the muscles feel like they get stuck for a second and then release.  I have also been taking magnesium, calcium, zinc supplements and eating more bananas for potassium.  Does anyone else know what I'm talking about?  Do you know how long this could last?  I think me worrying about it makes my anxiety get worse!  Thanks for your help.

Hi misslolo and welcome. You can be pregnant and still have what seems like a normal period. Do you have fibro??? I had horrible muscle spasms in Dec after hurting a rib that sent me to the ER on Christmas Eve. People with fibro do get muscle spasms but I would need to know if you have any other symtoms of fibro.
There is a thread called fibro 101, second on first page, that has a list of symptoms and a lot of other great info in it. You may want to do some reading there.

Thank you Marlee! I don't have any of those symptoms except the mild anxiety. I just have muscle spasms isolated to my adbomen. It's not painful, just really irritating....Any idea of what else it could be? How can you be tested for fibro?

Hi Misslolo,

There really isn't any test available for Fibro. Instead, you have to take a bunch of tests to rule out other possible diseases before you get a Fibro diagnosis. If you think these muscle spasms might be Fibro-related (which they might be-I've never had abdominal spasms, but I definitely get them in other places) I would suggest that you read up on all the symptoms of Fibro and talk to your Dr.

Marlee also lead you to a great place-the Fibro 101 thread is chocked full of info and you'll find a great comprehensive list of Fibro symtpms there.

Good luck to you! :-)

Oh-sorry. I misread your 2nd post. If you have looked over the symptoms of Fibro and don't have any but the mild anxiety, I would think it's highly unlikely that Fibro would be causing your muscle spasms. Not sure what else it could be, though. I do hope you are able to get it figured out soon and get to feeling better, though!!

I have the exact same thing but in my calves, exactly as you described them. My neuro after many many tests concludes that it is anxiety. He also said they can appear in other areas. So far just the legs. Can you see these spasms or tremors???

I do have fibro and that can be a symptom but not alone.

AHHH! The pains and spasms went away for a month and now they are back! Doctor says it's probably stress related. I'm getting married in a week but don't seem too stressed. Just the fact that I have weird abdominal tweeks drives me crazy! Does anyone else experience this? Is it just my anxiety. Everything else feels normal. HELP

Hey, I'm 4 1/2 mo pregnant w/ my second child and I believe I'm having muscle spasms too, in my adbomen by what i'm hearing from the other lady. I ask my doctor was it my organs moving or my muscle doing something new I never felt, she said it could be my muscle jumping but since it's not a bad pain there is nothing to worry about.  It feels weird like when I turn and bend over to pick up anything, something will move but it doesn't last long just for a second or so. It started a couple of weeks ago on one side of my adbomen now its on the other side and i know its not the baby b/c I feel the popcorn feel in the bottom of my stomach and plus he/she is not that big yet to be felt in my upper adbomen. The feel doesn't happen ever time I bend over but sometimes when I"m sitting or standing. Today was the first time I felt the after pain for like 20-30min, it doesn't hurt it just don't feel right. Does anyone Know what I am explaining  or can better explain what is going on, is it anything to worry about?
