Hi guys.  My daughter had a rash and the doctor said it was fifth disease.  Well now for the past couple of weeks my knees hurt even more than usual and I had red swollen hands and feet.  Has anyone gone through this before?  Any suggestions?  I just wish I felt better.

I'm pretty sure the symptoms of fifth disease are, fever, sore throat, and the rash on the face, so I'm not certain that your swollen hands and feet have any connection. If you're unsure, I guess you should check with your doctor. I hope you feel better.

Hi Anne-

My 17 yr. old son had "fifth disease" when he was in elementary school. It was the goofiest virus I had ever seen. He was itching all over and could not go to sleep one night. I had him take his pajamas off and he had the "lacey" rash on one of his upper thighs and a rash all over his body and it was driving him crazy. I took him to the Dr. the next day and they gave him a topical cream to put on the rash so he could sleep, but there was nothing else they could do for him.

I did not get it. Like patheral stated, I would check with your Dr. if these are new symptoms for you. These dang viruses!! I too hope your feeling a little better-

My daughter had that too when she was little. I thought adults couldnt get any version of it...but I assume they are referring to healthy adults.

Sorry you guys aren't feeling well! Cold compresses can help the itching - hot showers and even just being warm will make the itching worse.
Adults can get 5th disease if you have never had it. The joint problems would come after the infection. I would check with your doctor, but I don't know if there is anything they can do.
Hope you feel better.

Two years ago (age 39) I contracted Coxsackie virus, which is a form of fifth disease - I got it from someone whose son had it, and she also got it on her hands and feet. Mine was on my trunk and scalp, not hands and feet. I also had fever, bad headache, itching and rash where it itched. I was otherwise healthy, so adults can definitely get it. Shortly afterwards I started having terrible joint pain in my knees, and hand pain, and from there started having fibro symptoms. One of my close female relatives also started having fibro symptoms after contracting fifth disease from an adult in a separate incident years before mine; now she has had fibro for 15+ years. I believe that fifth disease/ Coxsackie virus can trigger fibro. I am sorry you are sick- I know how horrible it feels.
