Is anyone familiar with sciatica pain?  I have a relative who is struggling with it and she's uncomfortable in just about any position, except in her reclining chair.  Thank you for any help on this.

I also should have mentioned that she has gone to the Mayo Clinic 3 times, and has seen 3 different docs.  All they have done is given her painkillers.

I have had horrible sciatica, got it relieved (at least temporarily) with depomedrol injection in L5/S1 area. Shot hurts even with numbing, but to get rid of the chronic pain for at least a few months is worth it. I seem to need it about once a year.

Getting an MRI to see where the pinching is occurring uis very helpful. I have arthritis in lumbar, thoracic, and cervical sections with foraminal narrowing in all parts causing different problems. At least the MRI is non-invasive and doesn't hurt!

Sciatica is caused by an impingement of the sciatic nerve. My sciatica was chronic until
I had back surgery, a lumbar laminectomy. I have degenerative disc disease. There are times when sciatica will flare up and I will be prescibed Mobic for inflamation. A person
with sciatic problems should avoid bending over or twisting their spine. I was on Vicodin
for seven months prior to my surgery and three months after.

I agree with Alcie about getting a MRI done. Hope your relative gets relief soon!

I found the biggest relief I got from my sciatica was after I had orthotics made for my shoes...the way I was standing was aggravating it. Physiotherapy and chiropractic care also helped me alot.

I jsut went through this too. Had two days of pain in my right leg and hip. I wouldn't wish it on anybody. I took some celebrex and it seemed to help some.

Hope that your friend feels better soon.
