My wife has been a long time lupus, acid reflux, and fibromyalgia patient. She is currently 60 years old. She has just recently began suffering with esophogeal muscle cramping. This has become a major problem for her. We have had one trip to the ER, but none of the current medications she is taking helps her avoid these very painful cramps. Any suggestions?
Hi Halieshub, Im hoping more people will see this here. I have never experienced esophogeal muscle cramping. I have experienced alot of cramps in legs and feet. I have found that magnesium helps mine, but I have no idea if this will help your wife. Has she seen a dr. about this. If not when she does ask if he thinks magnesium will help. If she has talked to her doctor, what does he say about it. I hope she finds something to help with this soon. Welcome to our fibro family and feel free to ask questions anytime. We are here to try and help.

Hi, HalliesHub, and welcome!  I'm glad you found us and joined in.  I checked out the esophageal spasms and see that they can be caused by acid reflux (GERD) and you said your wife has this problem.  I do too and take Prilosec to help with that.
I did have some problem about a year and a half ago where all of a sudden I couldn't swallow.  Boy, did that frighten me!  But, a member on this forum said to cough and then try to swallow and that works for me!  I don't have a major problem and my doctor implied that it was a muscle spasm that was causing this problem so maybe this would help your wife.
I did check out the Mayo Clinic site that talks about treatment for the esophageal spasms.  Here is a link to that.
We do have a wonderful GERD forum and you could get help there, too.   Here is a link to it.
I hope you will get good answers for her.  Let us know how she is doing.
