The Romberg Test is a neurological exam where the patient stands with his

feet together, arms at his side and is observed for swaying or loss of balance.

The patient then repeats the procedure, this time with his eyes closed, if he

starts swaying and loses balance  he is considered positive.

I lose my balance when my eyes are closed.

I was wondering if there is a correlation between a positive Romberg Test and

fibro. Do you lose your balance?

I have never been tested for it, but I used your directions right now to try it. (And I looked up on wikipedia that you're supposed to stand that way for 60 seconds) At first, I thought I was marginally swaying. Then I tried it again, and tried really hard to focus my intentions and to stay still. I didn't sway then - well, fractionally, but I don't think that counts. I didn't lose my balance, stumble, or need to open my eyes. Hope that helps. (I am a little light headed tonight so maybe I'll try it again when I'm more well.)

Found this on the MS site. I was looked at for MS and they found nothing so far so I'm leaving it that way.

I tried it and didn't sway...I even stood on one foot and closed my eyes and was able to stand for quite some time without toppling over...I was more steady on my left foot than right.  Thanks Robin...I had fun amusing myself last night...LOL!  But then again, sometimes I off balance just walking around...go figure.

I lose my balance soon as I close my eyes. I know I have had this problem
for years but have never mentioned it to a doctor. It is one of those symptoms,
I guess I never really think about. How often do you stand with your feet
together, arms at your side, with your eyes closed. I had neurosurgery on my
back ten years ago. Saw a neurologist a year ago for an EMG and was never
given this test. Yesterday I googled the symptoms and that is where I first read
about the Romberg test. I was never tested and I have seen many doctors.

My curiosity about a positive Romberg test is given to the fact that from being
on this forum, I know quite a few of us have some back...disc problems. I was
wondering if maybe spinal cord compression had anything to due with fibro.

I get what you're saying, Robin. It certainly sounds like a reasonable thing to research. I'm one who has had back problems as well - no surgery. Occasionally I get vertigo like symptoms. Not nearly as bad, nor as frequently now as years ago, however. Throwing that out there in case it helps your research. My current fascination is with the gut connection. I think every avenue should be explored.

Hi Robin, I would try doing this if it wasnt for the fact that I would probably fall asleep as soon as my eyes were closed. lol
Even with my eyes open my balance isnt that great. Always been known as a clutz lol.
Sorry Im not much help here.

Robin,

I waver a little with my eyes open, more with them closed, but not to the point where I actually lose my balance.

Nope, I've had this test done many times and always passed it.

Meant to say that I failed this test both times with two dif doctors. The first one had to jump to stop me from falling. Think he pushed to hard!! lol. I have no spinal injuries that they have seen in xrays and mri's.

Thank you all for your replies. I'll mention the Romberg test to my doc and see
if a positive finding is significant to anvthing I have. It's still funny to think that I have
seen so many doctors in the past and was never given this test.

Over the weekend, I talked to some family and friends and gave them directions
to do the test. The only person who lost her balance was a friend who has spinal
stenosis.

Interesting, Robin. My mother has spinal stenosis - it is on my list of questions to ask my new Rheumy on Tuesday morning about myself. I'll let you know if it exists in me - maybe it will help your research.

Interesting read, I have Fibro, osteoarthritis, chronic Fatigue and have tested positive for Romberg, now guess the next step is to see a neurosurgeon and start the investigation as to why I can't keep my balance. I had a car accident when I was 18 and fractured my lower back so who knows how much spinal injury is linked to all this.

I fail this test big time because of the peripheral neuropathy in my feet.
