Hi, Sawfish, and welcome! I'm so glad you found us and joined the family! Actually they diagnose fibro by ruling out other illnesses because there is no good test for fibro. The only thing they use for us is the tender point test. You see, fibro has many of the same symptoms as other illnesses that DO have tests. So they rule those out. If you don't have any of those illnesses then a diagnosis of fibro is usually given.
It's just a really strange illness and the doctors don't know what causes it. It is recognized by the American Medical Association, the American College of Rheumatology, the National Institutes of Health, and the World Health Organization..just to name a few. There isn't a lot that they have to help, either, so we try things to see what helps us the best. On top of this, what works for one with fibro doesn't necessarily work for another to help control the pain. So, we have to try things and see what is the best for us. You will find lots of good ideas in this forum.
Be sure to read Fibro 101...the second thread on the forum. There are links to good info about fibro and you will learn a lot there. Good starting links are called Symptoms, What Else Could It Be, and A Thorough Explanation of Fibromyalgia. You might just see yourself there.
I'm looking forward to getting to know you better. Don't hesitate to ask questions because we are here to help you. Hope to hear more from you soon.
