Angry right now about a student confrontation in my last class. It has to do, peripherally anyway, with illness and pushing through when you don't necessarily want to.
Just had a temper tantrum from a student. She tends to have the excuse thing down pat, and has asked for several extensions already. Rotten attitude. She decided she wasn't going to do her midterm performance today because she was sick. I do not allow makeups for performances; Learn to manage the five minutes regardless of how you feel. This is in the syllabus. It didn't help that I had already had four people ask for rescheduling that day already.
She sent a friend to tell me she was going to be absent. I said I don't give excuses for performances, or reschedule them. Friend relayed this information. Student came flouncing in ten minutes late. She confronted me between speakers about why my policy was the way it was.
"Because sometimes in life you have to suck it up and do it, regardless of how you feel. This is one of those times when you need to go when you are expected, regardless. This teaches important skills, even though you might not give the best performance." When her performance came, she decided to speak about how unfair my policies were, and how I ought to have more sympathy for my students, especially when I cancelled class a month ago myself, because I was sick.
Really? That's going to get you a real good attitude grade.
I wanted to yell, "I cancelled class that day because of a medicine allergy, and because I vomited in the class before this one. If you really wanted me here, throwing up while trying to lecture, well, I would have stayed." Normally I stay, regardless of how I feel.
But, I didn't. I just took notes, and clapped when she was finished. This class has some good people, but also some real attitudes.
You know, in my discipline, you have to go when the time comes, you don't get to reschedule or cancel for any reason short of death. My personal philosophy is: vomiting or diarrhea makes me cancel, and that's IT. Frankly, I get so tired of dealing with bad attitudes. This is the kind of person who will have trouble in the real world, and that is just how I have to think about it. And let it go.
