I haven't posted for awhile, but I have read others posts from time to time. I have a question that I hope everyone will take the time to respond to.

I am wondering how many of us with Fibromyalgia used the antibiotic Cipro at some point in their life before they were diagnosed with Fibromyalgia?
I've been doing some reading, and it appears damage from Cipro can be permanent as it destroys cartilage and/or tendons and can permanently alter the nervous system as well as a whole lot more. It now carries a black box warning.

I had a rare UTI and was prescribed Cipro sometime before I gradually began to develop symptoms. I do not have my old medical records, so I can't know for sure how long it was before symptoms started.
I remember one of my first symptoms was the feeling like the muscles in my quads were being stretched like rubber bands. I also had severe gastrointestinal symptoms -- which could be due to Cipro wiping out good bacteria-- which occurred several months after the Cipro. And migraines, and then the sleeping issues began, and I was the type of person who slept like the dead once I nodded off before sleep became impossible. Over time more and more symptoms developed such as migrating pain in bones and joints and muscle spasms, and these are also side-effects of Cipro.

Oh, and blurred vision that fluctuated was also an early symptom, and apparently that can also be a side-effect of Cipro. That is also permanent.

Nope, not I, though have had cipro twice in the past year.

I was diagnosed a decade ago-ish. Family history. I will say that post-MRSA, five years and several super-strong antibiotics ago, my symptoms have been worse.

I have used cipro, but I was diagnosed with fibro prior to that.

Had it before and after fibro diagnosis. I can't use it often because my skin turns very raw feeling while on it. Washclothes feel like brillo pads to me when I take it.

Thank you to everyone who responded!

Some of my other early symptoms were chronic belching and bloat (sorry if this is gross). Also, a scary symptom was scrambling words and wanting to tell my husband something, but when I opened my mouth to say it, something completely different and non-sensical came out. I guess that would be considered neurological?

The intestinal pain and chronic malabsorption that developed finally took me to a doctor who did one test for giardia and when it came back negative, diagnosed "IBS."

Sometime later through repeated trial and error I found out I could no longer digest gluten and reacted badly to yeast of any type, which has only gotten worse as the years have rolled by.

Has anyone else experenced these strange early symptoms?

Also for those who responded (and for those who have yet to respond) regarding Cipro, keep in mind symptoms can begin months afer you use it and not necessarily right away. This is different than an allergic reaction. It involves DNA damage.
