Hi, Rebecca, and welcome! The symptoms you mentioned have been mentioned on this forum before...even the shaking in the head. I don't have that but I've heard several use that same term so I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't fibro.
We are diagnosed by going through a myriad of tests to rule out other illnesses that have many of the same symptoms. Once everything is ruled out, then a diagnosis of fibro is usually given. Many use a rheumatologist for this.
You said you have IBS and quite a few members have that also. It's a separate illness but coexists with fibro many times. I have Crohn's disease but not IBS. We do have a good IBS forum on HealingWell that could help you in that area, too.
Once you know what you are dealing with, the next step is find what controls your pain. Once you do that, you can live a full and enjoyable life in spite of this illness. I wasn't willing to use the typical drugs being given for fibro....Lyrica, Savella, and Cymbalta. I instead use ibuprofen with food, Tylenol, magnesium malate, vitamin D3, and a prescription muscle relaxer called Robaxin that has made a significant difference in my pain. I take less than half what was prescribed to me so I don't have any side effects, which is wonderful. I just get the relief.
Doing gentle stretching and gentle daily exercises is important with fibro. I walk and/or swim as my daily exercise. But, since you are teaching, I'm sure you are walking around a lot and that counts. Also it's important to pace yourself when doing things. It all gets done but in a different time frame.
When you get a chance, read Fibro 101...the first thread on the forum. There are links to good info about fibro and you will learn a lot there. Good starting links for you would be Symptoms, What Else Could It Be, and A Thorough Explanation of Fibromyalgia. You just might see yourself there. There are links about the supplements I mentioned and how they work in the body. There is even a great link about having a positive attitude when you have chronic pain. We do have to be our own advocates with this illness so arm yourself with knowledge.
I'm looking forward to getting to know you better. Don't hesitate to ask questions because we are here to help you. Hope to hear more from you soon.
