Hi Everyone,

I've been doing a little reading up on the subject of allergies and fibromyalgia being related. I have found websites that say yes they are.

I, myself, have noticed that when I'm exposed to an allergic environment or if I eat a food I'm allergic or sensitive to, my fibromyalgia symptoms become much worse.

My ENT recently put me on Flonase and I've found my ability to sleep has improved. But, if I eat something I shouldn't or expose myself to an allergen my ability to sleep is greatly affected.

I know it sounds as if I keep myself in a bubble, but I don't. I often venture outside of my so-called bubble and test how I do without thinking about it. I guess allergies are cumulative and the more we're exposed to, if you happen to have allergy issues, the worse our reactions can be.

Has anyone else noticed these things?

I haven’t noticed that but I have very few allergies. When pollen is high I will sneeze and cough more frequently but no worse problems with fibro. I’m allergic to cats. If I pet a cat I have to immediately wash my hands because if I touch my face it’s all over for me. My eyes start running and are itchy. But yet I have had cats in my house for 48 years because my husband loved cats and my kids do too. Having a cat has never made fibro worse. I know this as a fact because I’m far better now than when I was diagnosed with fibro 31 years ago.

But everyone is different. I know you have a lot more sensitivities and probably allergies. Things could react differently for you.

I am sensitive, allergic to so many things in our environment..many chemical sensitivities, as well as cats.

My daughter moved home for a job for a while after college, and brought her cat.. i thought i had adapted well to the cat over time, but after they moved out..and i got my house well cleaned..i began to feel much better..so i was reacting in ways i did not even realize..

Today we have march coming in like a lion on the east coast, ouch

Thanks for sharing that, Sherrine. It's amazing that you found a doctor who was able to diagnose you with fibro 31 years ago. Was it a rheumatologist? Yes, we are all very different.

Ljm, thanks for your reply. Interesting about your chemical sensitivities and things in your environment. Once, many years ago, I brought a stray cat into my apartment and overnight my eyes swelled shut and my nose was stuffed up... I also had trouble breathing. The next day I had to put the cat back outdoors and I needed to shampoo my carpeting.

Hope things aren't too bad for you and all others on the east coast.

He was a board certified Internist and I was diagnosed with fibrositis...that’s what they used to call fibromyalgia. The “itis” means inflammation but then they realized there was no inflammation of the muscles, tendons, and ligaments so they changed the name to fibromyalgia...”myalgia” meaning muscle pain.

Thanks for explaining that, Sherrine. And thanks for the definitions. How did you find such a doctor back then?

I found my rheumatologist back in the early 2000's, when I was diagnosed with fibro, by contacting a fibromyalgia support group. I heard at the time that not many rheumy's in my area were very knowledgeable about fibromyalgia.

I always try to find the very best doctor. I ask people and this doctor was not only board certified, he was also considered the best doctor in our small town.

Fibromyalgia has been around for a long time. They think that Job, in the Bible, had fibromyalgia. This doctor happened to know more than most about it. I’m posting the History of Fibromyalgia. Check it out.
