Is it safe for people with hep c to use Splenda instead of sugar?  I started using splenda several years ago and really like it.
Also, what about the use of hoodia to curb appetite? Is this safe?

Splenda is out, use honey instead of sugar. I've heard Hoodia doesn't work. I wouldn't try it unless it was organic.

CaryF, I was curious why you said splenda was out. I know that there are natural benefits to honey use but not sure why the splenda is "out". I thought that splenda was real sugar but no calories. Also, I did some investigation into the hoodia issue. Seems that companies are using minute amounts of hoodia in their diet products and claiming people can lose weight. The real deal is that there are African tribes that chew 100% hoodia bark to curb appetite and gain energy while they are on long hunting trips. Our store bought hoodia diet suppresants don't have enough hoodia in them to help with dieting. Go figure..............they'll do anything for a buck right?

Hi Shelly & Hep,

Splenda, also known as sucralose, is artificial sweetener which is a chlorinated sucrose derivative, its a chemical. Its probably not as bad as aspertame but I'd say it comes in a close 2nd. I guess it all depends on how "natural" one chooses to be, but it can cause thymus, kidney, and liver problems. My Hepatologist would rather see me use real (even white) sugar than aspertame or sucralose. I use honey as I've got quite a sweet tooth and we all deserve a few treats now & then.

I totally agree Shelly - anything for a quick buck & its up to us to read the labels and make educated choices. Diet is so important for us folks with Hep C. I don't want to sound like a fanatic. I believe diet is our most effective tool in managing Hep C (and weight). If I could get real Hoodia bark I'd probably try to chew it myself!
