Hi everyone,
I have a question that I am sure has been covered before but here goes anyway.
This is somewhat embarrassing but I have not been able to have a bowel movement for a week. I would take a stool softener but they seem to really mess me up. I seem to have a real problem with bloating. To the point my stomach will be rock hard. I am probably taking 6-8 Gas-X pills a day just to be comfortable. Yesterday the pain was so bad on the upper right side of my stomach (almost at the bottom of my ribs ) that it literally took me to the ground in tears. I am always worried about ascites, so I always watch for swelling. So far I have not noticed anything other than my stomach which I am pretty sure is just air. Is there anything other than Gas-X which may help? Or any other ideas? I'm at a lose and trying not to go to ER but may have if the pain gets that bad again. In fact I know I will because that pain is terrible. Thanks for the wonderful site.
Love and prayers to all,

Hi Pasey, I hope you went to see the doctor, and he was able to find your problem. I will pray that you feel better.

Pasey, the Gas-X could be causing the constipation.  Pain meds also do that.  The doctors put me on Miralax, which is a fiber.  However, it's usually not strong enough for me so I use an herbal remedy and sometimes magnesium citrate (which they usually end up giving me in the hospital when nothing else works.)  I think you need to speak to your doctor about both the gas problem and the constipation.  Your rock-hard stomach and abdominal pain could just be from constipation.

Hi pasey,

You don't say where you are otherwise with the disease. But if your ammonia levels are up, there is a chance that your doctor will have you on Lactulose, which will eliminate the problem. Lactulose stimulates the stomach bacteria to strip out the ammonia and triggers your bowels to remove the result, quite regularly if you know what I mean.

Since cutting out red meat and other iron, and increasing my fruit and vegetable intake, I have been very regular and my platelet count has increased.

I hope that you find a good solution that works for you.

Be well, John

Hi Passey

I am so sorry that you are having problems, but it is good to hear from you again. I have alot of trouble with constipation myself and bloating, so I completely understand what you mean when you say that as the day goes on it worsens. I described it to my GI as feeling like "Violet" from "Willie Wanka and the Chocolate Factory" when she ate the gun and blew up like a blueberry. Suggestion he gave me were altering my diet to include more fiber and increasing water intake. So far it really hasn't helped much. I thought my problem was due to my having crohns but now I am questioning it since other people here are having the same problem. Who would have guessed that the liver could cause so many problems.

Hope today finds you feeling better
