Hi all,
My husband is involved in a study group and is currently taking 550mg. of Rifaximin twice daily, the results have been very impressive yeah , confusion is GONE and he can actually have a conversation, fill out paperwork etc.!!! He is still extremely fatigued and has sleep problem's but at least the mind fog seem's to be gone.

Hi Judith,

I wish you & your husband well. Rifaximin is used in place of or in addition to lactulose & is pricey. Are you getting it free due to this study?

Hello Judith, My husband took it also. And it worked great for him too. It's actually an antibiotic. With the suppressed immune system patients get infections least my husband did. He also acquired that highly resistant Staph infection MRSI by visiting the ER and being hospitalized so much. So between the infections and high ammonia levels they tend to have frequent bouts of encephalopathy. So if the patient takes both Lactulose and Rifaximin it really helps them not have the encephalopathy so often.

And Cary is right it is very expensive. So I do hope that your husband is getting it free.

Both of you have a great day.......... turn

Thanks for the information yeah , and yes he get's it free as long as he is in the study!  They are hoping to get it on the market at a lesser cost is what we were told so hopefully this study will accomplish that.

Judith, I'm glad to hear that it is working to eliminate brain fog in your husband.  I think this is the med you said he was going to take for hep C.  If so, it is actually for encephalopathy and is already in use, as stated in the above posts.  Since it is free to your hubby, this is a good move for him.
