Anyone trying chinese herbals or egyptian herbal treatments (Matrine, oxymatrine)? I have heard that success rates are being claimed as high as the pegylated interferon plus Ribivarin but without the same side effects. I am at week 36 (of 48) of the conventional treatment for type 1 HCV and tested clear of virus at 12 weeks (yay!) but no guarantees that this will end up being a sustainable response. Plus, side effects have basically left me mostly horizontal for last 6 months.
My liver is only at stage 1 so I am optimistic that with diet and other immune system supports I will eventually be free of this virus, but if the virus comes back I am looking at other alternatives - I will not do the interferon/ribivarin again!

Knokno, welcome to the forum!  And congratulations on being undetectable at 12 wks.!

I, too, have hep C, and understand your concern that the virus will return, and also your reluctance to repeat the standard treatment.  I think you have the right idea about boosting your immune system and becoming as healthy as you possibly can.  This can be done through diet (mostly fresh fruits and vegetables, no red meat, plenty of filtered water and juices) and supplements such as a multivitamin and vitamin C.  This is what I am doing and I do feel better.  I know that the combo takes a lot out of a person, so I'm not anxious to try it myself.

As far as Chinese herbals, I know we had at least one member who went that route and claimed some success.  You might try doing a search here for posts on that topic.  However, I strongly recommend that you not take anything w/o consulting with your hepatologist.  Since you are now in a weakened state, it would not be advisable to ingest anything unfamiliar, even vitamins if you are not currently taking them.  I know you are looking more to the future, but if you are not already taking a MV and vit. C, ask your doctor if it would be okay.  This will help build up your immune system.  And don't forget diet!

Wishing you continued success.
