I suspect his kidney function is being compromised by his liver disease (hepatorenal syndrome.) Also, diuretics are hard on the kidneys. The edema could be a combination of both liver disease and kidney dysfunction. Even if he stops drinking for a few days and things improve a little...as soon as he resumes drinking everything will go haywire again. He simply hasn't accepted that his drinking is causing his problems. And he may get to the point where stopping is done too late.
