My mom has Hep c and has been sick for a very long time. She had a transplant in Calif. in 2005 and was doing pretty good. She is not and never has been a drinker but she contracted it through a blood transfusion. By 2008 the Hep C was affecting the new liver and causing lots of swelling in the legs stomach and finally settling in the lungs. We had her drained (for lack of a better term) and finally had a Tips Procedure to redirect the water. The Tips worked wonderfully and I would recomend it to those with similar problems; no problems with swelling in 3 years The problems we are having is with the ammonia levels. She has several bouts with high ammonia levels and confusion, so many in fact the ER Dr. advised a nursing home. We did that and she got better, so we moved her to an assisted living. After a couple of months again with the ammonia. SHe has a great Hepatologist here in VA. Last week we went to Wal-Mart and she wore me out with the shopping (keep in mind shes in an electric wc) the next day in the ER with an ammonia level of 347? Im so confused, shes been in and out of commas so many times. And we've been told to prepare for the end so many times and like a miricle in a day or too shes back. Im always glad to have her back but its happening so fast now. It use to take days where I could see it coming and give her more Lactalose but shes so scared to go back into the "Coma" because she says its scarry and she dosen't like it. NO doctor will tell us anything as far as how long it wil take or what to expect. I don't know what to tell her anymore, I just tell her to pray when shes in that mental state. She thinks everyone is out to get her.
She wont eat much, a bit or too here and there. Drinks some and takes pain meds. for a back pain. My moms only 63, and Im just 34 Im tring my best to keep up with this disease but honestly its killing me too. 8 years of this and I feel like a Hepatoligist myself! Any knowledge of the real end of liver stages, what to expect other that whats happening now. Is it painful, Is it fast???
Thank You, Blessings to you all
