Hi we found your site and have read a lot of the threads and already feel we have found the place we need to be. We live in lanzarote in Spain where we moved 12 years ago from the UK. My husband has just been diagnosed with liver disease we dont know which (but thanks to your threads we know to ask at our next apt)
He had problems in March of this year and was hospitalised after a seizure and was told he had liver problems. We didnt realise at the time how serious (our fault as more due to the language barrier than anything medical)
In August he had what we thought was a urinary tract infection with very dark urine, fever, jaundice, unsteadyness and water retention around the stomach and ankles. He was again admitted to hospital where we discovered his billirubins were off the wall and they struggled with getting the medication to control them.
Eventually they got him stable and allowed him home with 2 types of diuretics, becozyme (b vits and vit c), acfol. omeprazol (stomach protection) and ursobilane. However after a few days I noticed he seemed to be slowing down, very tired all the time, confused, shaky, disorientated etc. so I took him back to the hospital and he was re-admitted. eventually they said he was a little dehydrated and that his ammonia levels were too high at which point they added dulphalac to his meds and within 3 days he started improving.
He was allowed home - they have stopped one of the diuretics and now he takes
100mg espirolactone (aldactone) 1 tablet daily
becozyme c forte (vitamins b1, b2, b5, b6,b12 and vit c) 1 tab daily
5mg acfol (folic acid) 1 tablet daily
300mg ursobilane 2x1 tablet daily
he also takes 25mg of atenolol daily for high blood pressure and 100mg adiro (aspirin) for his heart as he had a heart attack 7 years ago (no problems since)
he is eating regularly and drinking plenty of fluids and taking his meds. his urine is a better colour although not straw coloured yet and his eyes are getting whiter. he is not drinking any alcohol although he did drink for years, he stopped in august
he has been at home now for 3 weeks and has had another ultrasound and blood tests which show a slight improvement however he is still tired and has no energy he has been told to walk for exercise but ten minutes is all he can manage and he is worn out. an hour out of the house is all he can manage with most of that sat down. he is getting depressed that he is not improving more quickly.
Is this normal for our situation does anyone know and will he improve as the weeks go on or should we be getting more help from the doctor
thanks for reading
