My story was somewhat similar to yours except for the TIPS. I had the Ascites in the belly, Edema in the legs, feet, ankles. totally emaciated with the pregnant skeleton look. My genitals swelled up to the point that it was painful and hard to walk, especially upstairs. They found fluid in the plueral space under my right lung which effected my breathing. I am also 6 feet tall and weigh 220 today. Over 3 years ago, my weight was 245-250 and I was emaciated. My stomach was huge, legs beet red from the shins down to my toes full of fluid.
After 3 Parencentisis and 2 liver doctors who were not addressing my issues the way I would have liked, my weight went down about
10 pounds each para. I changed to the MGH in Boston, MA. and the 3rd liver doctor got my fluid under control. At one time I weighed 182 and kept under 190 for a long time.
Differences from you is I still have the Hep C and Cirrhosis, my spleen is enlarged 14.2 to 14.5 the last 2 ultrasounds done.
I followed a low sodium diet for the 1st 2 years faithfully, but this last year has been hard to stay away from pizza, my favorite food and eating out at restaraunts because I am sick of cooking all my food.
I still have problems with my legs. If I stay on them for too long the cramping sets in or if I over exert myself more than I can handle the cramping is all over my body. Trying to get back on track with the low sodium diet and get the weight down 10 to 20 pounds.
Other than that my doc says that I am his only patient that is not emaciated but I take the most diuretics than any of his patients. 120 mg.'s of Furosemide or Lasix, 300 mg.s of Spironolactone and 3 Tblspns of Lactolose a day. He means the Lasix and Spiro. Other than that no varices, no confusion in the brain box just do not feel 100 % and probably never will.
