Parachute veteran fought for three years to get Hepatitis C treatment through the VA

hepatitiscnewdrugs.blogspot.com/2015/03/parachute-veteran-fought-for-three.html

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. A Parachute navy veteran has been fighting Hepatitis C for over thirty years.
Parachute resident Jerry Hammell contracted Hepatitis C in the navy and said he's been refused treatment since 1985.

"I was denied, and I reapplied, and denied and reapplied and denied,” said Hammell.

He fought for three years to get treatment through the VA Hospital, and thought he was going to die before he could get it.

"They put me off to the point where I was starting to have abdominal fluid buildup which is end of case scenario for me,” said Hammell.

Hi Buddy,

I see you are a member of the Prostate Cancer forum. Welcome to the Hep forum. Thanks for stopping in! Do you or a loved one have liver disease? My husband is the one with the sick liver. He is very sick, has had Hep C for decades, treated twice since being diagnosed in 2005.

This blog article is a bit confusing. I hope to clear that up a bit with a link for you. I wonder if there is a typo on the year this Vet began having his requests denied. (Perhaps 1995?) Treatment was not approved by the FDA until 1991. I am going to post a link for you from the CDC with the timeline. I hope it helps.

We have Vet's working through the process of getting treatment approval on our forum. The great news is this. The new treatments are in the high 90% cure rate, and we hope Hep C will be eradicated in our lifetime. No one should be denied a life saving medication that is easily available and only denied due to the price of the drug. Not acceptable. Big Hugs

I took the date as to mean he was denied treatment for liver disease - not a specific treatment - but in general.

If so, that makes more sense. It is shameful to deny those who served in our military.

I know reporters have a pretty small window to air a story on a complicated health situation. Let's hope he has the newest and best treatment and gets the care he so deserves. Big Hugs

Buddy, I know what you mean about VA. I gave up on them after 5 months of them dragging their feet. All they wanted to do was draw blood and give me another appointment. No treatment, no medicines, nothing. When they refured my to another va hospital, I got there to find out it was for hep-c counselling. That was the last time I went to the Va. I would have died before they treated me. The va doctor had no idea of what a meld score was. I had ask him what my meld score was and he had never heard of a meld score. I told him to Google it while went for more blood work. Thank God I had other insurance.
