Happy New Year to all at HW.
It’s been a long time since posting. I hop on and read posts from time to time. I have been staying away, trying to focus on myself and not so much on Dougie and his liver disease.
For those that aren’t familiar with me (Emma) and my husband Dougie, here’s a brief recap. Dougie was dx with alcoholic cirrhosis in the fall of 2010, at age 61. He was very sick, slept disturbances, jaundiced, gagging, frequent bloody nose that took a long time to stop. He stopped drinking and over 6-9 months his labs returned to very near normal range. These last 7+ years he has had several relapses, and long periods of sobriety. He sees his GI doctor every six months and his labs are now in the high normal range. During these years he has had two heart stents, melanoma on his chest, rotator cuff surgery. He is now 68, works two part time jobs.
In November, Dougie was hospitalized for five days. He went to ER with extreme abdominal pain and vomiting and jaundiced. For 24 hours it was unclear if this was the start of end stage liver disease or gallbladder. We were blessed once again...he had a serious infection in his gallbladder. Antibiotics, a stent in his bile duct, and s catheter drain put in. He is scheduled to have his gallbladder removed on January 8th.
Dougie still needs to deal with his alcoholism. Not sure what he is going to do about it.
For myself, I attend al anon from time to time now. I use to attend regularly, and it helped me a great deal, as have all of you. For all of you I am deeply thankful.
Wishing everyone the gift of health in the new year.
