My partner, Mike, has dpne very well since his liver transplant 9 years ago. But now this pandemic virus has me nervous. Is he more likely to get horribly ill is he catches it? We are pretty much staying at home but for pumping gas with gloves on, getting groceries that don't spoil, and picking up mail. Mostly he is. I have lung issues and am afraid. We live in SW Florida where schools, movies, closed , only restaurant take out is recommended. Thoughts? Mama Lama

First, it's nerve-wracking to live in such unknown situations so I would suggest calling your doctors and confirming the best approach for both of you. My husband and I are in our 60's/70's and in relatively good health but still I worry about 'what if' because of our ages. In the meantime, I wipe down doorknobs, light switches, keyboards, faucets, just about everything we put our hands on in the house with disinfectant wipes. If I go out to the supermarket, I carry a couple of the wipes with me in one hand and use them to open the refrigerated doors and to wipe down the self-checkout screens and buttons. I just stay very conscious of my hands and then wash them really well when I get home.

I guess using good sense is the way to go but if anyone has a specific health issue, I'd call the doctor to get reassurance. Our dentist's office sent us an email that explains how they are sanitizing the waiting room and asking patients to call and cancel their app'ts if they are sick. (duh, you know?)

Stay well and good luck!

Hi MamaLama, glad to read that Mike continues to do well. I do understand your concerns about the virus. Both my husband & I are in the higher risk (older & have health issues) for the virus. If possible order your groceries online & go to the pick up area to retrieve them. This will help keep you both from having contact with people in the stores. Follow the rest of the guidelines posted at the CDC's website. Above all, eat healthy & get plenty of rest to boost your immune systems.

A friend of ours had a liver transplant 2 years ago, liver cancer. His dr advised him to stay away from the public as much as possible, so he is doing that. He is self employed & has pretty much finished up his work & has gone to his lake house in a small town to avoid public contact.

I am in Tx, our schools are closed, fast food places have closed their dining rooms, it's drive-thru only, bars are closed & many events are canceled. It's all about keeping crowds very small to stop the spread of the virus & they are trying to contain it.

Please take good care of each other.

MamaLama: At some point earlier today there were two copies of your post on the Prostate Cancer forum. I deleted the one with fewest views (and no responses) and went to respond to the other one. Apparently, while I was typing someone deleted that post, too. There's an odd quirk to the forum software that if you are editing a comment when the thread you are responding to is deleted your comment winds up in limbo -- it shows on your list of recent posts on your profile page but is otherwise not reachable. My note (now in limbo) said...

I think you and Mike are at higher risk and it is sensible to be extra cautious.

I've seen a couple of papers starting to come out saying that they think the coronavirus doesn't much like hot weather so it might let up in Florida earlier than some other parts of the US. A few weeks ago the experts were warning people that they weren't sure it would follow a flu-like seasonal trend but they are starting to come around. We'll see.

In the meanwhile stay away from people as much as you can without going nuts. It won't last forever -- it might not even last very long... in Florida, at least -- and stay safe.

Thanks for all the responses.

We are doing the recommended stuff...it is important...Mike wears gloves to pump.gas AND going in doors...and wipes at grocery stores. I hadnt thought about the keys i. Self help cash outs. We do our phonesand k obs at home. No pets. Etc. I do a lot ofvolunteerwork but dont attend meetings just now. This week we are switching to conference call ins!!! Everyone hates calls...but rallies are out, tow nb halls are likely out, dood to door gandshaking is out...so how else will we get folks to get out the vote ... for the best candidates...

Hopefully both Mike and I will.be okay...live to fight another day.

Hi mama lama,
Miss seeing you. Hopefully you will check in and see this.

I caught covid in Dec. 2020.. I have atherosclerosis and pacemaker from Afib. I had a fever between 100-101 for 16 days. Couldn’t eat.
But I got thru it.

Hopefully these vaccines will work and lessen the anxiety of daily life for us people with age and Pre-existing issues.

Best to you and mike always
