Hi everyone, I am new to this site but I have found your stories very moving and informative.
My father has been diagnosed with ESLD and is very swollen at the moment. I have researched his symptoms and med results and as far as I can tell his iron is very high (he has haemochromatosis which they are trying to determine if it genetic). His platelet and white cell count are low and I think he may have an enlargened spleen as well as a shrunken liver. He has frequent cramps and has started getting palpatations.
The doctor will not put him on the transplant list for 6 months as he is still drinking (a pint a day).
My mother ensures he has a very healthy diet and low salt intake.
What I am looking for is alternative treatments. The doctors don't appear to be very optomistic and I don't want my dad to feel his window of opportunity has been closed. We have nagged him to give up the pint after work. My father is still working 13 hours a day and is obviously shattered when he returns home.
Any herbal suggestions?
Any medical treatments that have worked you can recomend?
Thank you for your support.

Hi Laura. Welcome.
I take some herbs. I go to a chinese doctor. The ones I take for my liver are Peony, magnolia, salvia and cardamon. I also have acupuncture once every two weeks. These compliment my other medication (Prednisone and CellCept). I have autoimmune hepatitis and cirrhosis. (my own immune system rejected my liver)

you need to ask you doctor about taking herbs. My GP laughs about it. Says I am just making someone rich. My heptologist suggested I keep taking the herbs and if my liver doesn't get any worse, he is prepared to say the herbs may ahev been a contributing factor.

Good luck with your dad. I hope he sees the light and stops his pint a day. That's one thing I have given up. (not that i was a drinker - just social occasionally)

Take care.

Hi, Laura. To be brutally honest, all the herbs, vitamins, and prescription meds available will be a waste of time if your dad does not give up drinking completely. Alcohol (even beer) is the worst possible thing you can do to your liver. That is probably why his doctors are not optimistic. If there is any way for your dad to cut back on his work hours, that might help with his stress. Frankly, I don't know how he is managing to work so many hours with his liver as bad as it is.

My prayers go out to you and your family.

I agree with Connie 100%. I also think if he is still drinking a pint a day, then he doesn't want to help himself anyway. And even if he stops drinking, he still needs to cut back or stop work - that kind of stress is bad enough all by itself. Does he feel like the family needs his income? I have chronic Hep C & I am on the transplant list with ESLD. If they find out I have started drinking, they will drop me like a hot potato (drinking with cirrhosis is bad enough, but with Hep C, it's like throwing gasoline on a fire). I wish you the best, but you've got to get him to stop - no ifs, ands, or buts.
