Hi Everyone,
I was dx'd with IBS or Spastic Colon in my 20's and had good result with amitriptyline and Citricil before bed for 30 yeaes until about 5 years ago at which time gas and constipation on/off and problems returned.  This has been a year of Dr.'s, specialists, tests (many uncomfortable).  They have finally figured out I have SIBO (Small intestin bacterial overgrowth).  I have done a lot of research since and found that there are many sudies out there that have proven approx. 70% of IBS'ers have or have had SIBO and that is can cause many of the symptoms.  I have horrible gas and gurglies and C & D at times.  I am happy someone finally figured it out with the hydrogen breath test (the far easiest test I have had thus far!) yet I have also read that it is difficult to eradicate and many coarses of antibiotics are sometimes needed.  If corrected, many IBS issues go away.  I have just been put on Xifaxin 200 mg. 2 tabs. 3x's a day for 7 days.
Anyone out there have SIBO and how successful was your treatment?  I sure hope this works because I am at the end of my rope with all this.

Hi twrtwn, I hope the course of rifaximin helps you! I took a course of this once back in the day and did not notice much relief; I found much more relief with Flagyl, actually. Then again, I was never officially diagnosed with SIBO either; it was kind of a trial-and-error type thing. I've heard some really great things about Xifaxin, however, and I didn't personally experience any nasty side effects from it, so it's probably worth a shot. Have you talked to your physician about probiotics, by any chance?

This is why probiotics are essential for IBSers.

Thanks for your reply Sarita.  I have read many of your posts and you are very noligable on IBS.  I guess we have all been through the ringer, literally inside & out!  Yes, I have been on probiotics for years.  Last were the pearls.  My Doc wants me off them while on the antibiotics but he had me recently on Flora-Q2 Dbl. Strength and I had good results with the C I usually deal with.  He said they contain bicilis and not the lactos which I have sesitivity to.  It confuses me because I can understand the antibiotics killing off both the bad bacteria as well as the good but you would think you would want to load your system up with good bacteria just to keep things in order???   Also, I have read so much on this subject and there is so much conflicting information on diets.  I was told to stay off anything gassy - i.e. raw fruits & veg., fructose and most sugars, starches, I am lactose after researching diets...I am left with rice & meat (not red meat) & fish.  I guess once things are in order again I can get back to a normal diet but I am basically living on water and air.  I am so sick of chicken and rice!  I could go for a big pizza, chocolate cake and a Captain & coke!  It would kill me but this is killing me too.  Wish me luck on first time eradification.  I have been down a really long road.
