I am a 30 year old female and was just diagnosed with IBS. I had a conlensocapy(cannot spell) and endoscopic done last Friday. They did send some biopsies off to rule a couple things out. I have pain in the upper part of my abdomen right under my sternum and it radiates under my left breast...sometimes my right, but not as bad. Is this common with IBS? Any ideas how to make it stop or help?

Yes, pain like that is common. Do you have any other symptoms--like constipation or diarrhea or heartburn or anything like that? If it's just upper pain like that, that moves around, it may just be gas. Some people have it real bad, all the time. The usual things to do to help treat it are:

1) avoid gassy foods, like beans and raw vegetables
2) take anti-gas medicine, like Beano or Gas-X
3) consume probiotics regularly, like acidophillus milk, yogurt or take probiotic pills, like Digestive Advantage or Culturelle
4) take fiber (this often causes more gas to start with, but some peple find that after taking it a week or two, it regulates their system so well that most all of the gas--old and new--goes away).
4) drink teas, like peppermint, to release the gas (not for people with acid reflux). I think fennel is also an anti-gas tea
5) do some yoga to help release the gas
6) try charcoal caps to help absorb the gas (also not bad to take if your gas is stinky)

I have Barretts Esophogitus too so yes I have "acid reflux. The Dr wants to rule out heart problems so I am going to see a cardiologist, but knowing that the pains I am experiencing are common makes me feel better. It is really scary, because I am 30 and have 2 children. I WANT TO LIVE! I have to do more health wise too. Any ideas on eating with IBS??

There's a good book called "Eating Right for a Bad Gut" that I read through once - thought it had some good ideas. I haven't figured out the diet trick - some people go dairy-free, some gluten-free, some vegetarian, some pescatarian, the list goes on and on. What works for someone may not work for another in that regard! I think the basic ideas are to incorporate soluble fiber in your diet, eliminate excessively spicy or fatty foods, and stay away as much as possible from caffeine and alcohol - all of those can trigger tummy upset!
