I have been a IBS sufferer for 4yrs now. At the beginning of April I had gotten food poison and have not been the same since. My docter ran stool tests, all normal. When I tell him what is happening "in my body" he just says "something your saying doesnt fit". Hmmm..well gee Sorry, that I can't follow the book. Today I had a Barium X-ray and what fun that was. I have had gas, abdominal pain, constipation, constant diarreah, severe fatique now for 5 weeks. I know I am not putting in more syptoms but this is making me depressed writing it down. Thanks

Hi Monkey and welcome to the board...I was just reading your post and see that you have "constant diarrhea" as well as constipation. Maybe this is what confused your doctor because someone who is having constant diarrhea is not, by definition, constipated. Does it just feel like you have to strain a lot but then it comes out as a loose BM? Maybe that's what you mean...anyway, your doctor does seem to be working up your illness the "right way," by first doing stool tests, then a barium x-ray, etc. but we all know how frustrating the diagnostic rollercoaster can be (we've been there before). Have you been given anything to relieve your symptoms while you are being worked up?

Welcome to the forum, again :) Keep posting!

hi monkey,
welcome.. I read your story.. i have also had IBS for 4 years, I have had many tests, like thebarium xray also.. not fun i know:) My Ibsgets very severe at times. The last 2 months have been terrible. I am also very tired and have some of the same symptoms as you.
What you are describing sounds like IBS, but things that sound like IBS can very well be other things. Im sure the Barium X ray will tell you something. It proved negative for me. Anyway, just hang in there.. i know it's hard. trust me. I'm here to talk to if you need. I go on the chat a lot if you ever want to go on there.
Good luck!

Hi monkey,  I suffer from ULcerative Colitis and IBS and mine started after a trip to Mexico in 1988 and the doctor I had told me nothing was wrong with me years later the IBS turned into a major flare of UC.  I guess years of diahrea can do some damage to the intestine.   But after years of reading and dealing with this I found that you need to replenish your colon with probiotics that are lost with diahrea.   They have helped me to have formed stools and no more diahrea.   You might not see any improvements for a couple of weeks but stick with it.  If  you read through the threads you will see that probiotics have helped others as well.

Diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis 1995
Salofalk Tablets and suppositories daily
Bio-K Probiotic daily
metamucil nightly

I posted an article here some time back that I found where some doctors were beginning to wonder if food poisioning had long-term, lingering effects. You might try googling it to see what you come up with; they talked in the article about wanting to survey people who had been posioned to see if they had normal health afterwards or not. They were even thinking that maybe stuff that looked unrelated, like suddenly coming down with arthritis or something, was connected. I mean, they don't call it food poisioning for nothing; as you know, some poisions cause long-term damage and can harm many parts of the body. So I don't think they were crazy for thinking this.

Hi everyone. Its nice to know Im not alone. I guess what I meant about constipation is when the diahrrea stops then nothing happens. I did take amitza but it only gave me diahrrea. I do take librax to calm my insides..he increased me to 3 a day, also he told me to try miralax. I forgot to mention I have GERD and hiatal hernia. I take aciphex. I am a migraine sufferer and take topamax. I take effexor XR for depression. I know that my doctor is going by what Im saying and doing the right tests...I just want it to be quicker! Thanks for the info about articles on food poisoning. Im very interested how that plays a big part in our bodies.

Monkey, there is a very expensive antibiotic that is used for stomach problems but I can't remember the name of it and it is often used for food poisoning. Maybe someone else will remember. It is not used frequently because of the cost, a few hundred dollars for a couple days. I wonder since you did have the food poisioning even though nothing showed if that would be worth talking to your Doctor about. I am sure he would know what it was. I think some food poisioning does stay in the system because I know 2 people that got sick of shell food and they had eaten shellfood all their life, after that they actually went into analphylatic shock if they ate anything in the shellfish family so who knows what toxins stay in the body.
