I just found this sight, I have had irritable bowel syndrome all my life. It is getting worse as I get older. I always had to know where the bathroom was. If there wasn't a bathroom available or nearby, I couldn't go. My gastroenterologist has worked diligently trying to find a reason for my diarrhea. I do not have Crohn's, I am not allergic to albumin, each year I have a colonoscopy with polyps and biopsies, they all come back negative. He has tried me on all different types of medicine with no help. I have to watch the foods I eat, no lettuce, beans, corn, potato chips, pizza, nuts, popcorn etc. I can't exercise, for it will cause me to go to the bathroom that much more. I am keeping Depends in business for sometimes I don't know when I have to go, I will be fine and then all of a sudden it comes out. I have even been asleep and wake up having a bowel movement. Thank God I am a widow. LOL
Anyone else out there like me?

Hi Paula,
Welcome to HealingWell!  :-)
Ahhh, the joys of IBS.  Surprises can be fun, but we all know that an IBS poop surprise is never a happy event.  It's not uncommon for us to be hit out of no where with extreme urgency.  I have been known to be woken up in the middle of the night with crippling cramps followed by D.  This was my main symptom the docs were concerned about.  I got put through the testing ringer because "with IBS you're not supposed to be woken up out of a dead sleep."  Ya, whatever.
Have you tried taking calcium?  Calcium at night before bed might help you with your nighttime (and morning) D.  You should talk to your doc about it.
Here's a great post about calcium.

Hi knittingfool, welcome to the forum, you'll find you have a lot of company here...I'll be the first to admit that I don't trust an IBS diagnosis if someone wakes up from a dead sleep with diarrhea on a regular basis, but sometimes there isn't a better answer to give, so it's a default diagnosis. I'm so sorry that you are keeping Depends in business! At least you have a sense of humor about it...that's the most important thing, I think. To keep your head on straight with humor when other people are simply horrified! Ugh, what other choice do we have sometimes, right?
