How do IBSers deal with the mucus that the condition brings? Is this a common symptom? Is it very much food related or stress related?
I find that when my IBS is bad and when I go to have a BM movement my colon seems to be very tense so when I "squeeze" to pass stool the motility isn't there and rather I just produce mucus. Do other people notice this too?
(I should add that I eventually will pass the stool. I suffer from IBS-D rather than C)
Med free for a bit as I needed a break from Asacol

Mucus is very common with IBS. I don't think, though, there's anything to do about it but poop it out. It doesn't seem to make either D or C worse (in fact, it might make it slightly easier to pass a hard stool).

Some have theorized that the excess mucus is the result of some sort of allergen irritating the intestines--just as your nose runs when you come into contact with something you're allergic to. So if it really bothers you, you might try an elemination diet to see if you can find anything that makes your IBS (and mucus) worse. Common allergens are dairy (including the ingredient casesin), gluten (found in wheat and many other grass-grains), nuts, and additives, like dyes and preservatives (i.e. you need to eat organic to avoid all additives).
