hey everyone,

what a relief to find people that I can relate to.

I have recently been diagnosed with IBS and still feel really worried and lonely on what is happening to me.
I have always suffered with bloated belly and trapped wind etc but recently I develped a sharp stitch pain in my left side about same level as my belly button. I was alo starting to get constipated over a few days. I went to the doctor who gave me laxitives and I went home and the obvious happened. about 1 day later the pain came again and sure enough i couldnt go to the toilet so more laxatives. The pain tends to get worse after eating too much or onions or caffeine - does anyone else get this. Oh and to top it all off I have a sharp pain below my left boob now as I think I strained so hard I have pulled a muscle!
I am now taking buscopan tablets when the pain comes on, I have sore tummy which is bloated and find drinking movocon helps.
I have no blood in my stools and generally feel well apart from the above.
It may help to mention that I have been stressed recently but wondered if this sounds right for IBS?

Any comments appreciated! turn

Hi princessem,

Welcome to HealingWell! :-)

Your symptoms do sound like they could very well be IBS. IBS is a diagnosis through exclusion... Has your doc put you through a battery of tests?
The Buscopan should be helping your spasms. Have you found that it helps with the pain?
I have never heard of movocon... Is it some type of gas reliever?

Have you ever seen the advertisements for Dannon Activia? It claims to get your GI functioning "normally" in 2 weeks. It's worth a shot for the abundance of probiotics it provides.

By the way, I added a subject line to your thread. I think it will give your post more visibility.

Hi princessem and welcome to the HW :)
Everything you have described sounds about right.
It's good that you have recognised some of your eating habits which seem to contribute to a worsening of your symptoms. It can be a very lengthy task and alot of tweaking and bouncing back and forth but my advise would be to cut out anything you feel is making the problem worse, such as the onions and caffiene. I have huge issues with both of those. Also trying to eat smaller meals can help alot. I'm a long time sufferer and still have many days where i feel I'm banging my head against a brick wall. After a bad few months I started eating much smaller sized meals and it has helped so much with my pain and bloating ~ why I didn't try that one years ago i don't know rolleyes
Everybody is different and react to different things and lot of it is trial and error, but here you are bound to pick up lots of useful tips, advice but most importantly help you feel less alone :)

I meant to say if cutting out certain foods, remember to do it sensibly, and one item at a time which you suspect may be a trigger food to see what, if any difference it makes :)

ah bless you guys!!!

I was awake at 4:30am with sharp stabbing pain in my left side again and after going the loo it helped but 1hr later it started aching in my side again.

I spoke with my dad today who thought I may have Diverticulitis so I have called the doctor today and kicked off a little saying that three months of belly torture without one test is not acceptable. Sure enough I have been booked in for Monday morning with the plan to get a scan prefer to know at least what is happening :(
Does anyone else find that their employers are not as sympathetic as you thought they would be...mine is giving me real grief about being at the doctors - because they cant see it they dont think it exsists!!!

By the way im 29 years old and will be glad to be back to normal!!!!

Thank you all so much for your help!!!!!

Definitely hear you about the employer thing...when I worked, I was looked at like I had three heads when I told them I was sick. Now I'm in med school and people are generally more understanding, even though most of them just want you to "suck it up" since we are supposed to be "self-sacrificing" in this profession.
