Hello,

I am new to this list.  Wondering if anyone here might be able to give me some help.  I am well aware of IBS-D as I have had it for almost 25 years.  Was diagnosed with it when I was 18 and I am now 42.  I saw a Gastro doctor back then that was very good and new about the benefits early on of Questran for IBS sufferers.  He put me right on it after 2 years of no meds and going through H**L.  Never being able to go anywhere.  I have had a pretty bad case of it over the years.  It really did help.   I moved and had to start seeing another Gastro Doc that wanted me to try switching to another drug.  Cannot remember the names of these 2 that he wanted me to try, but both times I tried to switch off the Questran, I had such abdominal pains that I ended up in the hospital, and I take pain pretty well.  Had me to the point that I could barely breath it was so bad.

Anyway, I guess as I have gotten older, the questran has not been working like it use too.  Not to say that I would not continue it, but my main reason to try and switch to something else is I have been having alot of muscle aches and pains along with feeling very fatigued the past year.  Very low energy.  I have seen written while researching that long term use of Questran can possibly produce these symptoms.  My Doc wants me to switch to Welchol, but I have also heard that it to can produce these symptoms.  I am wondering if anyone else out there taking questran has had these symptoms and if they have made any changes in meds for the better.  Would like to have more energy and less pain causing inactivety.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi jeffl1107,
Welcome to HealingWell! :-)

First thing's first... Have you been scoped to rule out any IBD? And, secondly, have you had your gallbladder out?

There are quite a few people on this board who take Welchol instead of Questran. They find Welchol to work better. Since the Questran isn't helping like it used to anyway, you might as well give Welchol a try. I really don't even remember a single member complain about Welchol.

They are similar meds but sometimes even the similar ones can make a big difference individually...so I would give it a whirl if the Questran hasn't been helpful. Best of luck and let us know how it goes!
