Does anyone have more problems when they exercise?  Everything I have read says that moderate exercise is helpful.  My problem is when I exercise, my symptoms get worse.  I am exercising very little.  Soon after I stop, I get nauseas, gassy and I burp.  Any thoughts about this?  I am detemined to keep on exercising, yet I do not want to be wher I was last May - rectal bleeding.  I haven't exercised regularly since then bc I was scared to.  I started exercising again last week and the mild symptoms are back.  I will see if the symptoms progressively get worse when I continue to exercise.  Any thoughts on this?  Does this happen to anyone else?  If so, what do you do?

Also, if I don't get 11-12 hours a sleep a night, I am exhausted.  When I get that much sleep I can be productive throughout the day.  If not, I need a nap.  If I don't get a nap, I am really dragging.  Any thoughts?

Thank you!

Pam

Exercising helps with digestion. I too start burping when I get active. I get nauseous too, but only if I've just eaten. I think it's all normal. I really don't do anything about it... I just know it's part of exercising. Usually when I'm done it all goes away and I get hungry.
I'm a little confused about your rectal bleeding. It was caused by exercising? Have you seen a doctor to help guide you on a proper exercise regimen for you?
I run on 6 or 7 hours of sleep a night, so I can't really give any input on your sleep question. Sorry. Hopefully someone will come along shortly to give their input on your questions as well.

That is way too much sleep to need to function. Too much sleep is as bad or worse than not enough. Have you had thyroid blood test done or a sleep study. It sounds like both of those might be helpful.

Maybe not enough vitamins / minerals as a result of some other issue?  Even if you are on a multi-vitamin Look into Magnesium and Potassium and see if anything matches up.  You could also look into Vitamin D but that one seems a bit more controversial to me.

Thanks for the responses.

As far as the bleeding goes, it was at the very beginning of a half marathon.  I had a colonoscopy which showed ulcers and inflammation - but not UC or Chron's.  They then said is was post-infectious IBS and the IBS symptoms may stay for a couple of years.  I was exercising 2-3 hrs/day 5-6 days/week.  I never had any symptoms until I started training more.  At first it was the N, B, G and then came the cramping, D, back pain, then the bleeding.  The bleeding freaked me out so I stopped working out completely - Dr recommended it.

Prior to this, I slept 9 hrs/night with no problems.  Now, each time I have started to workout, the symptoms come back - so I have stopped.  This time, I am going to continue and see what happens.

I've never had a sleep study - the fatigue only started last May and I'm not sure if my thyroid was checked.  The fatigue started with all the other symptoms so I have always thought they were related.

I'm just bummed that working out seems to be bad for me!  Very strange.

I would get a second or thrid opinion if I were you...ulcedrs and inflammation never go with IBS, those are typical symptoms of crohn's or UC.

Try a different form of workingout, something gentler than what you've been doing, BTW what kind of exercising have you been doing?

I was training for a half ironman in May so I was running, biking, swimming, lifting weights and doing yoga.  Now, I am riding a bike for 30 minutes and my heart rate stays around 110.  I started run/walking this week - walk 3 min/run 1 min for 16 minutes.  This is nothing compared to where I was before.  I'm not even breathing heavily because I am hoping if I start out slowly it won't be too bad.

My thought is that I am going to continue to train for a race this summer and see how bad my symptoms get.  It may sound strange, but I would rather workout and get sick to hopefully find out what is wrong.  This sounds like a better option for me than to be sedentary and not know what is wrong.  Am I nuts?

- My initial diagnosis was colitis and now they say it is post-infectious ibs.  Since the pathology reports have come back negative for UC and Chron's, they say I just have ibs.  They have also told me that it is in my head bc nausea is not a symptom of ibs.  I know the bleeding was not in my head!  - the doctor also said that there was too much bleeding to be from hemorroids.

Some people with IBS get nauseated at times...but blood and stool tests are not 100% accurate in confirming either CD or UC either...clearly you've had a scope and they saw both inflammation and ulcers, that's more of an indication of an IBD then it is IBS...find another doc, that's what I would do.

Hi Paytonboho,

Just wondering, is there something you eat/drink when you're training that you don't consume or consume much less of when you're not training?
I have IBS and I used to need minimum 8 hours of sleep every night and often felt nauseous too.
Since I cut out some foods, I feel totally different. Need much less sleep, never feel nauseous anymore.

For me the offenders are the usual suspects: sugars, processed/refined foods, most animal products, chemicals, additives etc.
Eating mostly fruits, vegetables, legumes and some nuts. Drinking only water, herbal tea and a little natural unsweetend cranberry juice (diluted).

Have you confirmed you're not experiencing a food response?

Are scopes 100% accurate?

My eating is the same as before the exercise - since I'm barely exercising. All I have is water - no diet change. When I am really into training my diet changes - becomes much more healthy. I was desperate this summer and went to an acupuncturist/oriental med doc. He did some testing for food allergies and nothing showed up. I have also tried removing different things from my diet and there doesn't seem to be a consistent pattern with regards to what I eat and how I feel.
The nausea started when I started working out again and it does not go away. Sometimes it is worse, but it is always there.

I was put on Colazal 9 pills/day this summer. I went to a second GI doc who told me to stop taking it. She then did a second colonoscopy, found inflammation again - no ulcers this time (1st colonoscopy in May, 2nd in August) and she put me back on Colazal. That is when she said I had ibs. I didn't take the Colazal the 2nd time. It doesn't make sense to me. Why should I take Colazal if my dx is ibs? Is anyone ever treating with Colazal for ibs?

Thank you all for your help and feedback! I feel very lost and frustrated.

Nothing is 100% but with two scopes it probably is. Colazal is not usually used for IBS but for UC so I don't know why you were prescribed it. It can cause fatique. I believe that some arm exercise can cause esophageal problems but I don't think it has much to do with IBS. The fact is they don't know what is wrong with you which is why they say IBS. As far as the bloating and gas after exercise that is more apt to be done by poor breathing and swallowing air.
