Hi. I've been experiencing what I would consider mild fecal incontinence. I've got either IBS or functional incontinence. My symptoms go as follows, I've had constipation for quite some time till recently (paradoxical diarrhea), terrible gas that I can't control, and occassional seepage of small amounts of mucus.

I work teaching English at various English schools, and at other places. A lot of kids comment to each other that I stink (they don't think I understand them), and I get some negative reactions from adults and even a few that ridicule me.

I've seen two doctors about this problem, and neither of them took me seriously. Both said that if my anus was open I'd definitely have a stain on my underwear (I don't), but the bad gas and occassional mucus leakage are not my imagination (I can smell them myself, and a few students call me poop teacher cause I smell like that despite leaking nothing but gas).

Of course most people are either disgusted or find it a fine thing to make fun of. I don't expect people here in Japan to change their attitude.

But from what I've read on some medical sites and wikipedia, chronic constipation can weaken the rectum muscles, and that there are four levels of incontinence (1. Gas 2. Mucus 3. Liquid stool 4. Solid stool), and at least to me it makes sense that I could be number one edging on number two, and that leaking stool could take on the smell of wet feces, wet feces being the result of lots of fiber and water). But I can't convince the docs here that I actually have a problem. They say that I'd have a stain on my underwear, and suggest that it could also be psychosomatic.

Any ideas, or is it just all psychosomatic (highly doubt that seeing as I can smell it sometimes, and kids often comment that I smell like crap.

I added a subject to your post, as it will give it more visibility. - Lil  :)

Whoops, that's not functional incontinence, but meant to be functional constipation.

Whoops again, I meant that leaking gas can take on the smell of wet feces.

Hi Quack,
Welcome to HealingWell! :-)
Have you tried over the counter gas medications? What about seeking natural treatment? Charcoal? I've even read about gas absorbing underwear.
Hopefully others will be on here with some advise soon.

You should go to another doctor, demand tests.
It could be anything from ibs to an inflammatory disease ( dont mean to scare you but the doctors being an idiot to ignore it)

Good luck !

Hey Quack,

Asia has a really low instance of IBD (such as crohns and colitis) so they probably have much less experienced GI docs. Could you make it back to your home country to see a doc? Mucos is often a sign of crohns or colitis. Take frequent bathroom breaks to wipe w/ baby wipes. That should help get rid of the leakage frequently so that it doesn't have time to fester. What if you wear a feminine pad?
