Everything I've read says that pain associated with IBS is typically in the left lower abdomen but mine is primarily on the right.  To the point I thought it was my gallbladder but tests revealed gallblader was fine.  I get so anxietal about the pain that the anxiety makes my pain worse.  It's a vicious circle and I'm really tired of it.

I have pain on the right side and I too still think it is gallbladder, but the GI dr said it is IBS and since I have had 2 scans already I don't have stones. I don't believe it.

I actually get it on my side, like between the ribs and the hips. It feels like really bad gas pain, but it doesn't move like gas pain usually does. I've had the ultrasound to check out the gall bladder and all the other stuff, but it was all normal. Glad (and also sympathetic and sorry) that I'm not the only one with unexplainable pains!

Please take my reply with a grain of salt, as I have had two colon resections, so much of my pain results from those procedures. That said, I frequently get pain on my lower right side, especially with constipation or a bowel movement. I haven't found anything that helps, however, so I am sorry about that. Maybe someone else has a good remedy!

I'm glad to here I'm not the only one with undiagnosed right side pain. I have it exactly where you have it. I ended up in emergancy in Sept 08 for 5 weeks. I had surgery done Dr thinking it was appendicitis, but it wasn't. Turns out I had a small bowel obstruction and later diagnosed with 2 abdominal abcesses which were drained. Unforunately they do not know what caused all this and I am still having the right side pain. I have had my gallbladder out. I normally post on the crohn's website.

All the best in finding out what yours is.

I also have right sided abdominal pain with my IBS with diarrhea. My gallbladder was removed years ago and I've had many tests for appendicitis. I have no ovary or tube on my right side so I know it's not that. I have had several cat scans and it showed I had adhesions wrapped around my small bowels, which had to be surgically removed. I still get the pain, some times they last for 3-4 days then all of a sudden it's gone. Although, sometimes I have a lot of gas and get relief. I try everything to get relief, charco caps, simethicone, bentyl.

This is my first time on here. I have no appendix, ovaries or gallbladder. Do have a lot of stress, fibromyalgia and Barrett's esophagus. Constipation most of the time. Pain on the right side way up under my rib cage and basically my whole abdomen. I get a gnawing feeling in my stomach at times....most of the "classic" symptoms. I drink prune juice ...not much help, but it does turn the stool about the same color. Had a upper respiratory infection about 3-4 weeks ago which seemed to start all the symptoms again. One day was totally pain free and "normal". Does any of this sound familiar?? Any suggestions?

My husband has had chronic right side pain for years. He had surgery in 2005 for an elongated twisted colon and mobile cecum. They removed his entire right colon, cecum and appendix. He still has the pain though it is not as severe. He was tested after the surgery and everything came out normal. He only gets relief when he lays on his left side for a time. He is taking Align and very high doses of acidophilus bifidus. This does help but the pain comes every day. He cannot tolerate beer and eats a very healthy diet, high fiber.

What is welchol? I looked online and it says that it is a cholesterol drug.

Hi Sheila,

Welcome to HealingWell!  :-)

You are right about Welchol... It is a cholesterol reducing drug.  It does, however, have a constipating side effect that has done wonders for people with D.

Here are just a couple posts that discuss Welchol:

Welchol and IBS

WelChol - Gallbladder issues - need help and advice!!!!!

I too have had pain in right side at my waist on and off for 2 years. It feels like a gas spasm and can literally drop you to the floor. The only relief is when I lie down and a heating pad also helps. I have had a colonoscopy, ultrasounds, CT scan, blood work and am told IBS. It helps to know that I'm not the only one with this sympton.

I have had severe back pain on right side , especially in the morning, for 6 months now. I went to Dr 's, they found blood in my urine, kidney s turned out fine, no bladder infection, but I have a cyst on my left ovary which has grown to 4 cm. They also found I have a tilted uterus, but dr said that shouldnt be causing pain in mid back section...As well, my stool s have been different, with black specks when I wipe..I know this is alot of different prob, but I need advice. Still have no answers for pain. Thanks

Sorry to hear about your helath problems. Hope you are feeling better soon....My daughter has abdominal pain...we have found out through upper GI and lower bowel tests that she has an unatttached ascending colon and cecum. (The appendix and cecum have been seen in 3 different places and upside down.) She has intermittent constipation and nausea...we think it is twisting or folding, then untwisting and she has relief of symptoms. She is on meds. for bile reflux, miralax, fibercon, and prevacid but symptoms keep on comin'. Surgery has been recommended by Gi dr. and surgeon at Columbia but 2 other surgeons said no surgery. We are concerned and not sure what to do. Her quailty of life is greatly affected and we are worried about the strain and stress this has on her intestines. Anyone ever heard of this?

I have had this chronic pain in right side for about 20 years that comes and goes.. My doctor diagnosed it as Gastritis! When i eat certain foods or even too much coffee anything that is acidic it will flare up.. Gastritis is an inflammation in the lining of the stomach so to avoid it just watch what you eat and see if that makes a difference for you or even try an antacid and see if it goes away..

I also have pain which starts on the right side, but then moves to the left. Don't really know how to explain it properly. But I think there are no rules regarding IBS pain, it could be anywhere...lucky us! I do suffer from gastritis as well, but that's a different kind of pain.
