senna is in most of the colon cleanse products and will turn your colon black. Who told you it was good to flush out the body. Not a doctor, I assume.

thanks for replying canyonbabe,
If it turns another color i guess that would make it hard for future colonoscopys to show abnormalities.. however, in the mean time - i gotta go to the bathroom to get something out. people seem to sip bitters before meals all the time -- from what im reading - bitters are to aid in digestion - and elimination - due to the fact im doing neither on my own anymore.. the alternative is to put pharmaceutical crap in my body instead to "flush" me out - so i guess nothing is perfect but i rather natural than unnatural...

According to what the Doctor told my friend it won't hurt anything but you can be dependent on the colon cleanse products which she was. She is now off them. Are bitters senna? I don't get the connection between the bitters and the senna.

i see your point, from what im reading up on .. senna gives the bowels a push.. i guess the thought is that if the bitters are invignorating (sic) the liver, gallbladder, pancreas and they are given a jolt - then the digestive procress needs a bowel stimulant to clean out the gut ( in which all the organs are now active) from all the sudden energy from the above said organs -- this is supplement i hope to use every two weeks - stop for a bit and use again .. i think most medications and supplements should be used that way anyway - just so our bodies are not dependent on anything outside itself. I suffer from horrible constipation ( and now reflux issues) and terrible indigestion - which I feel may stem from lack of acid in my stomach / and or digestive enzymes ( in which i take as well) its a process, and who knows what will work ... all i know is that i hope my body toughens up a bit.. and gets back into gear - cause being sick and uncomfortable is like death.

your absolutely right -- i just check for bitters that dont include senna ( or laxative additives) and they are out there -- so im going to explore "safer" bitters w/out the laxatives - which might be too strong in the long run :)

If you think you have a lack of stomach acid there are simple tests that can be done. I have been taking hydrochloric acid capsule for almost a year now and they have definitely helped with my digestion. However they were still not enough, so now I am on a 2-phase tablet that releases hydrochloric acid in my stomach and pancreatic enzymes in my instestines. It has further improved my digestion. But my experience is that neither will improve your constipation if other factors are not addressed.

Get a copy of "The Auyervedic Cookbook" by Amredea Morningstar. Not necessarily for the recipes, but for information that will have you looking at food and your body in a very different way. A way that has helped me conquer my IBS and is aiding in my elimination of my constipation. I have the added benefit of having found a great naturopath that has training in Auyervedic medicine, so I may not have had the same result by just reading the book, but it was a very helpful starting point.

I know there is a lot of "junk" out there on natural and conventional healing, you just have to explore and find what works for you. Auyervedic has done right by me, so I pass it on for anyone willing to consider it.

redeetomove, thank you for your input - how did you figure out you had low acid / enzymes? did a conventional GI doc diagnose? or did you trial and error with HCI's?

where can you find a 2 phase capsule? -- i dont want to assume that I need a pancreatic enzymes -- im not really sure what the heck is going on -- im just trying to give general blanket holistic tinctures to my gut / liver, pancreas and gallbladder - i suffer greatly from indigestion-which causes more gerd and constipation -- it seems to me that something out of whack is happening with my digestive organs -- i keep a healthy green diet - low carbs and low junk... so i dont think its my diet...

im exporing a herbal bitter to take prior to meals- minus the laxatives and looking to buy triphala / psysillum husk powder to help with elimination

Auyervedically speaking my body must be hot/dry since im experiencing these issues -- my diet is mostly alkaline.. and has been for awhile.. so im not sure .. im perplexed
