about a month ago I started burping A LOT! I've also be sick since last august, stomach problems with nausea and some diarrhea. After a lot of testing my Doc decided I probably have IBS, but I might be Lactose intolerant (they haven't tested for it yet). This all started happening when I ended a treatment of Keflex. So my stomach issues are still up in the air, but I'm not any ware near as sick as I was Aug-feb. I coulden't eat anything but crackers and plane mashed potatos, sometimes chicken, for months because i was so nausious. So I'm ok on waiting to find out whats going on with my stomach for now, even though some days I'm still really, really sick, and I'm not sure if the burping is related...

...Anyways, I did a tally for an hour one day and I burped around 200 times. And its like that all day everyday. I tried Prylosec (no luck), gas x (didn't do anything), an anti-spasmodic (no luck) and now I'm taking AcipHex (only on my 3rd day but nothings getting better yet). I don't know if I'm swallowing air or not. I'm know I'm not physically "Swallowing" But maybe I'm forcing aid down my throat and it feels like I'm burping? Because sometimes the burps feel like i have to force them up? I'm really not sure whats happening but I really want it to stop. I know I don't burp in my sleep and most of the time don't even burp for the first 10-20 mins I'm up. And I don't burp wile I'm eating, so I've been eating alot of food lately. LOL and its all bagels and stuff since I might have IBS or be lactose intolerant... or both...

Please is someone has any suggestions let me know, I really hope someone out there has an answer because I'm going a little crazy over this....

Have you taken probiotics? Keflex messes up the balance of bacteria in your gut and that could make you extra gassy. If you haven't tried probiotics, I strongly suggest you give them a try. You can do some searches on this site for ones that people have liked.

Why does your doc think AcipHex will help with burping? Sometimes excess burping is caused by slow digestion and acid blockers such as AcipHex would actually make it worse. When your digestion is slow, bacteria builds up and creates excess gas. Lowering stomach acid slows digestion even more and worsens the problem.

If lactose intolerance is a possibility, stop eating or drinking any products containing lactose. I'm pretty sure you'd notice a difference rather quickly. If you see an improvement, then you know lactose is a problem. You don't have to wait for the tests. Be careful though, lactose is in things you may not expect.

My great-grandmother used to belch constantly.  I remember being a kid and wondering at her in amazement; I never knew anyone could blech that much.

Needless to say, you should not be drinking anything which is carbonated, including beer.  My mother used to drink Sprite and would get to belching as much as my Granny!

I second taking probiotics.  Antibiotics indeed wipe out the good bacteria in your guts and can cause all sorts of problems.  The probiotics can give you gas (probably out the other end!) when you first start taking them, but you should get used to them in a couple of weeks.

I would suggest Culturelle or Digestive Advantage in the swallowable (not chewable) pill.  Those are the two easiest probiotics to find (look in the bowel products section of any pharmacy store) and I've taken both to cure antibiotic-associated diarrhea and to cure some stomach bug I picked up on vacation (maybe from bad water).

Everyone always says not to drink carbonated beverages but I've found that sometimes they "get the burps out". After a glass of seltzer water, I'll burp like crazy for a bit. Afterwards, I feel so much better and less gassy for hours. The extra carbonation seems to get all the excess gas out.

I rarely drink carbonated beverages but when I have a lot of gas pain, seltzer water is the best thing around. I like seltzer because you aren't getting sugar or any artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners.

It's worth a try to see if it helps.

When I went thru that the first thing the Doctor asked was did I drink carbonated beverages. I don't. He said not to drink them as they were only temporary relief at most and all they did was add more CO2 to the stomach. No gum chewing, no straws, no hard candy or anything that might take in more air. Burping is usually caused by air swallowing or carbonated beverages. Milk products may cause gas in the intestines but it isn't usually the kind you burp out. It goes the other way. I am surprised the simethicone didn't help even though I have to double up on it. I also use the Heather's Peppermint, fennel, ginger pills and sometimes Maalox Max and they all help. I don't think I would use the carbonated beverages even if you think it helps. It may be compounding the problem long term.

Thanks for all you responses! I have taken Probiotics. Digestive advantage for Crones Disease when I first got ill (in august) and now I've started taking Digestive advantage for IBS. And I did the 2 week activia diet about a month ago.

I don't chew gum, use straws often, or have hard candy or anything that might take in more air really. I used to drink ginger ale for my nausea, but I stopped as soon as this burping thing started.

I wasn't really aware of the slow digestion problem...But that's definitely something ill look into.

I've cut out alot of dairy but not all of it yet. But I don't notice it affecting me too much... I donno... I didn't feel too bad today aside from the burping and i had a starbucks drink with 2% milk in it and a pop tart (surprising they contain milk)

Thanks again for your help.... any other suggestions will be awesome!

I think you will find that cutting out milk entirely will help. I just had another friend that found it was the thing that was causing hers. I don't think it is dairy as much as milk and the enzymes in it, not necessairly the lactose.

So the Aciphex isn't doing anything at all. I'm going to try and cut out dairy. Already have for the most part, except for in my morning coffee. Mostly i use soymilk now for cerial and stuff... I don't know what I'm going to do though. My BF suggested going to a hypnotist to see if that helps, but its SOOO expensive.... maybe wort€h it though... cry

This is in regards to puppypaws post:  I have IBS just 2 weeks ago I started burping up rotten/sour smelling stuff out of my somach, at least 100 times a day, then I started dry heaving and could not eat or even take a sip of water.  I was on vacation so I went to the ER and they said that I had a acute IBS attack.  They put me on pain meds because of the constant pain in my lower left Quardrant, and many different antibiotics, and liquids.  After 4 days in the hospital I went home, still could not eat.  The doc said it would take a good two weeks for my IBS to settle down.  So after the 2 weeks I started to feel like my old self again so I slowly went back to my normal eating habits.  Just 2 days ago I started getting sick with it again, so now I am trying some adidophillus pill to see if that will help me.  I am lactose intollerent so I am taking some dairy easy with my pills as I do not want to make my symptoms worse.

I am very bloated, nausiated, painful trapped gas in my intestines so now I am bummed that I am so sick again.  I dont use ice in my water any more and I quit chewing gum as they produce gas.

I have to watch everything that I eat so basically I am on water and crackers.  So if you have the same symptoms that I have had dont let it go, either go to the hospital or try restricting your diet.  I am also on chronic pain meds and that makes it worse.

Something totally threw your stomach out of balance and it can take a long time to get back to normal. I would stick with chicken, fish, potatoes, noodles and rather bland foods for awhile and not any sugar substitutes as many people cannot tolerate them. Stay away from the grains for a while. Take the acidophalous or the IbS digestive advantage and give it time. I can no longer drink anything but instant decaf coffee. Any ground coffee still tears me up.

Thank you for you reply.  I can't take acidophilus as it contains dairy the same as the probiotic.  I am going to try just baked or broiled chicken with a dry potato for a bit as I can not eat any seafood or fish.  I also have alot of problems sleeping as I cannot get my body to quit shaking inside along with my muscles so tense I can't relax.  I have been awake all night and sometimes this goes on for 3 days of no sleep.  It just seems like my health has really gone down hill so I will accept any advice that anyone can give me.  Thanks again.  Leslie

There are nondairy probiotics, I used to take one but I can't remember the name. A good natural food store sales clerk should be able to help you. Ask if they have samples, this way you can try it without spending a lot of money.

You can also buy non-dairy soy based yogurt with probiotics in it.

Wow, that is really good to know.  None of the health food store's around here said anything about a non-dairy one, so now I will call around and ask.  This site is really helpful..thank you.

I can't drink coffee. Caffeine is a stimulant and can make some people's guts overactive (in fact, even regular people can get D if they overload on it). Unfortunately de-caf coffee is not caffeine-free coffee; it still has some caffeine in it. Coffee itself is also acidic, which is not good on some people's stomachs.

I gave up any lactose and coffee and well as red meat and pork. I can't really comfortably eat fruit or veggies. I really hope its not the breads making me sick, since its all I seem to have left besides chicken. My stomach seems to have calmed down the tiniest bit though and I've stoped burping so much. But I am still very very naseouse all day. Tried taking ginger with little luck, also drinking peppermint tea...doesn't seem to help either.

Hello all. I have had some of the same issues (chronic burping, lots of gas from both ends, difficulty keeping food down at times, heartburn, colitis, heart racing, etc.) and have had some success with some major changes in my life. First of all I have a hiatus hernia. The chronic burping, gas and bloating were from candida overgrowth in the digestive tract. This makes sense (at least to me) - if the stomach is compromised (through the hiatus hernia) then the rest of the digestive system can't really work well either. I had to go to an integrated medicine doctor to get the candida diagnosed. After a radical change in my diet - low carb foods only, very small meals, no meat, no dairy, no caffeine, no soda, taking digestive enzymes. I was also on a course of lamisil which is an antifungal to beat the candida overgrowth. I kept my diet low carb for several months, and just started introducing some carbs into my diet. I have had success. Unfortunately I was on an antibiotic for a sinus infection and had a recurrance. Am battling to get back to where I was a month ago. Digestive tract issues take much time to heal. Good luck to everyone. Hope this info is helpful.

I know it's been a while since this was posted but it sounds like you might have Lyme Disease. I had very similar symptoms and it took a long time for me to get diagnosed. You need to see a Lyme Specialist, as many times it is misdiagnosed or missed all together by family doctors. I still have problems with my stomach and burping is one of the last remaining symptoms. Hope you've gotten some relief since your original posting.

Hi, maybe your more lucky than you think. I've had IBS since my birth and there was gasy periods while I cannot burp ending up painful enough to faint with big indigestion.

Now I burp voluntarily at least 100 times a day. I do practice also relaxation and breathing techniques. This allows me to feel perfectly pain free. Mayby you must try.

If you wish you can read on my experience in my book Dyspepsia and IBS for the Wise released in Decembre 2011 :

I burp and hiccup 1000's of times a day and have for about 2 years now. Doesn't matter what I eat or if I eat at all. Only way to stop it is to force myself to vomit or at least gag. This may be temporary and have to be repeated many times during the day. Sometimes it wall stop after a wild wheezing session and then about 5-6 sneezes followed by spitting out lots of saliva. Sounds gross and believe me it is. I've had every test (upper and lower GI, Ultrasound, Endoscopy, Colonoscopy, CT Scans, MRI) and all is "normal". Have tried alternative therapies like physical therapy, acupuncture, and Chinese Medicine all with no luck. Thinking about hypnosis next. My GI doc says "I've seen this before, don't know what it is or how to fix it".

I know this is a really old post...not sure if anyone will see it anymore. I came across it as I've been having similar burping issues the last few months.

Did anybody ever find a cause/answer to their chronic burping? I'm so desparate to know what's wrong with me...since all tests keep coming back "normal".

Please help!

dmarie725......I still have not had this stopped and it has gotten increasingly worse. 2 1/2 years now and no cure. Going to have another endoscopy in a few weeks, this time with ultrasound and a biopsy which scares me. Have had 2 CT scans and motility studies and they all come back "normal" so I will see how this goes. Let me know if you have any new things to add.
