hi james-

what do you mean your endoscopy is with ultrasound and biopsies? is it just a upper GI endoscopy of esophagus, stomach and intestine? i had that a few months ago and they took biopsies which were normal. are you just having an abdominal ultrasound, or what kind? just curious?

is your belching worse with eating? what have your doctors actually said they think could cause this, or do they have no idea?

my doctor says that "bad things have been ruled out" and that he thinks its just something "functional"...meaning the body is doing it but there is not disease or medical cause. i don't totally understand that. it still worries me.

for me, it happens on and off throughout the day without eating, but is significantly worse when eating or drinking. the only thing that makes sense to me is that my stomach somehow cannot hold any air, or something is malfunctioning and won't hold the air in. i have no idea if that makes any sense...but this never used to happen to me.

i'm really hoping the new GI i'm seeing can offer me some opinions.

well, reply back when you can.

YES YES YES!!!!!! finally someone who gets me.

That was one of my 1st symptoms, burping (more like BELCHING) all day long never stopping. was 1st told "its your anxiety and you are swallowing air"

then the gut started hurting, and gurgling so loud I would have to get up and leave church!

finally had an endoscopy with biopsy last April 2013 and guess what???? I had H-pylori. you will have to research that on your own. But it is a serious infection caused by bacterium. Had to be on triple antibiotic therapy for 2 weeks.

so after that still burping still pain, oh and did I mention that in the course of all this I lost 50lbs!!!!! which was probably the only good that came out of this since now I am a size 6.

went in to have Hydrogen breath test (since now the h-p has been eradicated) and guess what??? I had SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacteria Overgrowth) again you can research that at your leisure.

so back on antibiotics for 2 more weeks.

well both infections are now gone but it has left me with very bad IBS and my gut has still not healed from all this

I take a very good probiotic and l-glutamine, I try to stay away from gluten, sugar and dairy.

as of the last few weeks I was getting better and then a couple days ago it has come back with a vengeance!!! I have been burping and eating pepto bismol like crazy.

James the endoscopy was a piece of cake & believe me I have issues with severe anxiety, so no one was more afraid than I. Get it done so you can have some answers

sorry this was so long but I was so happy to find other belchers out there and I drink ONLY water and I do mean ONLY
Married, three grown children and two grandchildren/ Christian
Anxiety/depression with a little OCD in the mix/ Fibromyalgia dx Sept 2013, after having two severe stomach infections/ dry eye/ menopausal...shall I go on?

Meds: Zoloft 50mg, weaning off slowly, no longer works
Xanax .5mgs BID sometimes need .25mg mid day also
Motrin when pain is 7-10

I started these little burping episodes while in college over 20 years ago. For years I would occasionally burp for about 30 minutes constant, probably 4 to 5 times per week, sometimes more, sometimes less. Nothing otc helped. about two years ago it became worse and more frequent. Now I burp everytime after I eat, when my stomach gets empty, when I lay down, and sometimes 2-3 hours straight. Some foods make it worse, so I try to avoid them but nothing has really helped. I sometimes think it could be celiac or another food or additive intolerance. There's so much added to our food supply these days. I did a yeast cleansing diet once years ago, and my stomach was almost normal, but it was so restrictive that it was near to impossible to stay on and I got extremely thin. I'm thinkin of trying an elimination diet to see if I can figure out if certain foods or additives trigger it.

Hi,I have been having these burping spells for years and have found that my biggest culprit is caffeine.Especcially coffee and chocolate. If i avoid those two things and only drink caffeine free sodas and coffee the burps will tone down dramatically, somedays almost gone completely. But if i eat or drink something i shouldnt they will come right back.Hope this helps someone who is having this problem because it can be really frustrating and uncomfortable at times! Many of the times when my burps are acting up really bad, it causes my heart to pause or skip beats,, does anyone else do this along with their burping???

I've had what I call my "burp disease" for over thirty years. I went to multiple specialists and had every test possible except swallowing a camera (my insurance wouldn't cover it). I do have GERD, but was told I must be gulping air then burping it backup. That's really not what's happening. A few years ago I was diagnosed with classic migraine--I used to call it my stomach headache. Well, treating the migraine with triptans cures the burps as well--I will burp for an hour or so then both the headache and burping are gone for a few days. Oddly, the headache was sometimes very mild--so much so that the burping was the biggest problem.

Good luck to you--the cause may be something surprising as was one.

Hello all out there, The usual problem with burping is trapped gas and excess acid. I do the same thing after I eat sometimes. Doc told me I had a hiatial hernia and did a throat stretch. It could be spasms too. It is now easier to digest food. Levsin sub lingual may help too if that is it. Caffeine/coffee/coca cola/Mountain Dew and chocolate is probably the worst thing you can put in your stomach except for constipation. I don't want to sound like a "know it all" because I'm not. Just putting it all out there to cover what wasn't possibly mentioned. Have you tried a couple of teaspoons of Baking Soda? Usually it's good for excess acid causing gas. Parasites/amoebas? Of course there are all kinds of problems that can cause burping as I'm sure you know. Are you having hiccups along with the burping? I know a cure for that if you want it let me know. I'm sure probiotics were mentioned. That seems to help every condition or disease associated with digestion issues. Anyway, GOOD LUCK.

Sounds like there is mold in your home.....our family of 4 experienced same symptoms for years. Or you are breathing toxic air from chemicals, but I'm sure it's mold.

dmarie725 & others on this thread--any update? I also have a major burping problem, a gas problem, but besides that no other symptoms. I've been seeing a GI for about 6 months, to no avail. I tried cutting out certain veggies, dairy & gluten but that didn't make any difference. I've tried baclofen and an antibiotic and that didn't work either. I've had an endoscopy & that still hasn't worked, so would love to hear about ideas from others. I belch about 100 times a day, often extremely loudly and it's of course very embarrassing and seems so random

I know this is an older thread, but I just wanted to add that I've always had tons of burping. What I did that got rid of maybe 80% of it, was to quit drinking liquids with meals. I drink them in-between meals instead. I don't know if it's air-swallowing or washing away my stomach acid, and then I don't digest the food, but it definitely helped get rid of the burping a lot for me.

I have IBS, GERD, and lactose intolerance. I use a non dairy creamer with my coffee in the morning. Cant give up my cup of coffee. Do you think the non dairy creamer causes stomach upset. Would the powder form be better? thanks.

Had exact same issue burping and heart skips one hour (feels weird having heart go crazy), then the next hour fine. Purchased a heart monitor from Amazon after running to doctor failed to catch it in time. Tracked and recorded the abnormal heart beats to show doctor. Turns out, it was caused alone and in combination (Allergies and dehydration). Not excess dehydration. If you eat a food that you suddenly become allergic to, this concentrates in the blood depending on fluids. Drinking water will dilute this in blood. I have always itched slightly when eating red pepper items (Buffalo wings, shrimp, barbecue, etc), horseradish, etc. Itch depended on eaten quantity and dilution with drink. Getting older, I went on a diet and stopped drinking sodas, juices, milk, etc and started on water and coffee. Too much coffee and not enough water. One fine day after drinking lots of coffee in the morning, followed by buffalo wings at lunch (Adkins diet) and not enough water I start with the heart problems. Went from just fine all my life to "can't have". Drank lots dragon tea one day (did not think it had caffeine) and it just about kill me, literally. Doctor looked at monitor readings I took and said I came close to a heart attack. FYI Doctor had me drink coffee and come in to compare my monitor to his .They were exact. Find your allergy, drink lots of water. By the way the body will and can filter out enough allergens in a few hours to make you feel fine again. Apparently there is a threshold.

Any comments, feedback, ideas, etc.

For now going on years, my wife has suffered from chronic burping. All day long. My recollection it started with excess gas production as the bloating caused internal disruption of normal organ/skeletal structure and resulting pain (like when you brief feel internal pain but ultimately the gas finds it's way out). This is still a problem and the burping became chronic. I've clocked it: about once every 40 seconds on average. She ultimately settles down during sleep but that's it. However, getting comfortable enough for sleep is a nightly ritual and even at that not always successful due to the pain of the bloating.

There is very little carb in her diet. Dairy is virtually non-existent, no coffee, only herbal non caffeinated tea. Except for curbing carbs, the rest was of her liking any way. Traditional medicine has been a total failure. I suspect low motility causing bad bacteria buildup (I am deficient on technical terms). She's been through 2 rounds of purging the bacteria, it helped for about a day and then all is "normal" again, i.e. she suffers. She curbed sugar and anything starch for a long period of time (months) but no abatement what so ever. She will now occasionally enjoy a bit of candy and has returned to having a bit of corn as a vegetable in our normal dinner diet (we stopped eating corn altogether for some time). Her morning breakfast is usually some kind of fruit and bacon. We were somewhat on the Adkins diet only coincidentally while exploring (with the input of the web) how to modify our diet to address what may be at the root of the problem, i.e. food intolerances. Paleo seemed like it should be a good way to go and for a while she lost a lot of weight while trying to stay paleo (and no sugar, no carbs at all, etc). Some weight has come back as some things we cut out are now enjoyed occasionally through capitulation of a dietary discipline that provided no positive results (other than the weight modification). Carries a bit of weight but is not obese.

As it relates to most of the coincidental symptoms I see most of you suffering from in the thread, the commonality seems to be only the excessive, chronic burping and, for some, the never ending production of gas. The swallowing of air, etc, frankly, we can't figure that out. How do you know? How do you stop? etc. Heartburn is not an issue. We don't see how GERD can be a factor. IBS doesn't seem to be the issue either. There were bouts of the cycle between diarrhea and constipation but some of the solutions she has discovered have alleviated this as a problem, yet still with the gas and belching.

Any thoughts and recommendations will be helpful. Any who need to know what all she has done to address this, please ask you questions and I'll put it to her to let me know about this and that. Frankly, we've done so much to address this that I've simply lost track of most things, settling into an acceptance of her suffering. But then here I am, starting the fight again.

Consider celiac disease testing. It starts with a simple blood test. There are over 300 symptoms for it, making it difficult for doctors to catch. Here is more information from the University of Chicago:

I'm sure I would take a gold in the burping olympics! I've had an upper endoscopy and a ct scan and everything looks good, except for a small are of gastritis. I talked to my doc about it and he said it's usually from swallowing air. That's hard to believe that I swallow that much air! I do think sometimes I manufacture a burp (unknowingly, in order to feel that I've decreased pressure in my stomach.
But......I asked the doc how to fix that and he said that they send people to the speech pathologist ti work with them, since many times, it's a throat/muscle issue. Isn't that interesting? They help people with swallowing problems....especially with things like post-stroke, etc. I wonder if they could really help those of us who burp constantly? It would be interesting.
I've tried to cut out drinking liquids during meals, and that has helped a considerable amount.

Did anyone ever find a solution to this? I've had an endoscopy/bioposy/ultrasound with no luck. I take Prilosec and eat a bland diet - no caffeine/alcohol/tomatoes/spices. I am desperate for an answer! I wake up burping and continue to burp ALL day. If it's not stomach related, could it be something with my lungs/trachea? ugh.
