IBS hit me like a pile of bricks almost 2 years ago and just recently I have been doing some research on parasites. I have been wondering if theirs a connection. Has anyone else done a parasite cleanse and have you seen a difference in your IBS symptoms? I'm very nervous to do a parasite cleanse because BM's are so painful for me! Not sure what to expect and I haven't seen a whole lot or anyone else ask the nasty question. sad

Do you have a good GI Doc?

What tests have you had done.

Parasites don't cause the symptoms of IBS.

"Diagnosis

Clinical Criteria for Diagnosis
In the absence of definitive diagnostic physical findings or biological markers, the diagnosis of IBS rests on physician’s recognition of classic clinical symptoms and the exclusion of other diseases. The presence of abdominal pain or discomfort is essential to the diagnosis of IBS.

"Stool testing for Ova and Parasites are generally of low yield (0-2%) and the outcome of therapy on symptoms of IBS in patients with parasites is unknown."

Colon cleanses are NOT recommended for IBS.

IBS is not a disease, it is a diagnoses of exclusion. Which really means there are hundreds of things that it could be and a good Dr. is just going to test for about 20 different things and if nothing comes back as the reason to your symptoms they say "yep you have IBS, go home a deal with your symptoms." No Dr. is going to run hundreds of tests, they just do the basic or most common. shawn12 usually has very good resources and his word should be held pretty high, but if you find information on parasites and you feel that it matches your symptoms then you should really check into it. I really believe you are the best advocate for your health.

IBS hasn't been a diagnoses of exclusion for about 5 years. Read IBS 101 post.

"Which really means there are hundreds of things that it could be"

They have ruled out quite a bit already and it actually could be millions of things. But modern research has learned a lot within the last 10 years.

Parasites are an infection and IBS is not an infection.

So are we talking about IBS or parasite infections?

Doctors don't need to run hundreds of tests to diagnose IBS is most people, it can be accurately diagnosed, its just most people don't trust the IBS diagnoses in part because many don't understand how they do it, based on a specific cluster of symptoms, minus red flag symptoms.

"but if you find information on parasites and you feel that it matches your symptoms then you should really check into it"

I agree. And if you find information on IBS diagnoses that matches your symptoms then you should look into IBS.

IBS sucks, what parasites do you think you have or they have diagnosed you with?

This is another issue. The leading cause of misdiagnoses is self diagnoses.

No i don't have any parasites, I looked into when i was first being diagnosed 2 years ago, and the symptoms never matched with me so a really haven't investigated it. I had a bad day yesterday and was kinda venting (SORRY :( ) But, searching4hope if your symptoms match with parasites, research it, and talk to your Dr.

Peoples' first reaction to what causes IBS is usally foods, bacteria and infections. But its much more complicated actually.

The symptoms themselves seperate a lot of these conditions.

Internet parasite cleanes are usally a scam. Also if you do have IBS they can upset the bowel for a bunch of reasons.
