Hello. I normally browse the IBD forum but I am having some confusion over my symptoms so I thought perhaps this forum might be able to offer some help. For just over 3 weeks now I have been experiencing the following symptoms which I had never experienced before (or at least never experienced them for such a long period of time):
- An unusal increase in urgency (feeling the need to use the toilet sporadically through out the day but especially in the morning). If I choose to I can 'hold' myself from using the toilet but it becomes uncomfortable. If I cave in and use the toilet there will always be some stool that comes out (either a small or large amount).
- An increase in the number of BMs I have (normally it would be 2 per day, but now it averages 4 - 5)
- A mix of yellow and brown stool (in some BMs, the stool will be completely yellow, whilst other times it will be fully brown and sometimes the two colours will be present in one stool side by side).
- Slight 'pulsing' lower left and lower right abdominal pains (which occur sporadically through out the day but sometimes in the evening become a continuous ache rather than a 'pulsing' pain)
I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Proctitis (ulcerative colitis confined to the rectum) in early October after having bleeding for several months (but no increases in urgency or number of BMs). Immediately upon starting treatment the bleeding disappeared. I had another colonoscopy done in late November which again concluded that I had ulcerative proctitis which was considered mild and almost in remission. Since treatment for my proctitis I have not noticed any blood or mucus in my stool, no increase in BMs/urgency and no alteration in the colour of my stool or abdominal pains UNTIL about 3 weeks ago (though there is still no blood or mucus).
I went back to see my GP and GI who both said that it is probably IBS (because the colonoscopy came out with only proctitis, blood tests were normal and my ultra sound was also normal). I am still awaiting an MRI though.
Is it possible that I have developed IBS? Can IBS form so quickly and suddenly? Should I be concerned with the yellow stool (which I heard was a sign of malabsorption)?
I have read through some portions of the IBS 101 thread and feel that the video by Dr. Douglas A. Drossman does concisely sum up what IBS is but I thought it was still appropriate to post this thread.
I have asked similar questions to my doctors who each have given differing answers...
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks,
