Hi everyone I hope you all are well!!!,I need ya'll's advice my best friend is having a house warming party tomorrow night.I'm a lot nervous worried if I'll be ok scared I might need to use her restroom! There is going to be food there worried about if I should nibble on some foods?!! or make me a plate,or just make me a plate to go.There is going to be a lot of people there so I'm worried about my anxiety!! Wondering if I should eat something light before I go there?, so I wont be hungry with my stomach growling. This is why I stay away from social gatherings and events,it's always a process on making myself go and praying I'm ok!!!! My best friend really wants me there I told her I'm coming she says we will see if I make it.She knows how I am she knows everything concerning my IBS and what I go through with my anxiety.I really want to stay home but I'd also really would like to go and just have a good old time! I'm going to pray sooo hard  and ask God to show up for me.I'm going to ask him to pleeease do not allow anything embarassing to happen to me! I need to start thinking positive starting tonight so the positive thoughts can manisfest themselves tomorrow night! I'm looking forward to reading you all's suggestions of what I should do?!! Thank you sooo very much it will be much appreciated!!! Wishing you all the best in the healthiest digestive health!!! smilewinkgrin

Well, you're young jt and when you're in your age bracket, it's natural to worry about these things. Me? Well, I'm an old fart, lol, 55 and by now I've invented so many tactics and fibs to get thru party invites.

When invited to a party, I do not eat anything 4 hours prior to the start time. And the meals I consume before the event are plain, low residue and possibly 1 yogurt cup. Yogurt coats your GI tract and protects it from a later onslaught of offensive foods/drinks.

While at the party, if a cocktail one, I don't eat. Only sip one beverage. And make it appear as though I am drinking beverages but in reality, I am not. Who knows if that one glass of wine or bottle of beer is my first or third? No one does. If anyone asks if I'm eating, I declare out right fibs but who knows the truth? Only me! I might say - oh not hungry right now (but in reality I am hungry), or I just had a large lunch or dinner and just stuffed. Or - I'll grab a bite later in the party (again, not the truth). People nibble at cocktail parties, often times putting down their half eaten plates and move on to chatting with friends. Sometimes you'll see people put a new food on their plate, try it but not like it and leave it. Again, who is watching all of this? Hardly anyone, possibly the host/hostess but honestly she/he is so buying restocking drinks, ice, and throwing away dirty plates, napkins, that they won't even notice if you're eating, drinking, trying this or that new appetizer. Trust me, they won't notice.

Now if it's a true sit down dinner, then well that's tricky.

I do fill my plate, but with VERY small spoonfuls. And nibble. Actually putting one teaspoon amount in my mouth and chewing very, very slowly. I try to consume a miniscule amount of food and hope no one notices how little I did eat. I might leave the table and invent a reason to use the bathroom (this is one time it's the truth, usually!). I might drop my plate off in the kitchen, not to return to the dinner table.

If anyone presses me why I am not eating a full meal while they all are, I say - I have to eat lightly now (for me I have an excuse people usually accept, I say I had part of my colon removed due to cancer and they usually do not ask anymore questions, thank God!).

I much more prefer cocktail parties. Everyone is so busy chatting, no one ever notices that I do not eat anything at them!

Hope everything goes well. Remember, it's okay for us to fib. I am usually one to promote the truth but in a social setting most people do not want to hear the truth - hey I poop all day if I eat. lol No I never say that. I just simply say - I'm not hungry right now. Sigh.....

It does suck though because it would be great to try all those appetizers/food wouldn't it? But I know what would happen if I did and so I just - don't. Ever.

i think you have the right idea...enjoy the people but stay away from those tricky foods. hope it goes well for you. the more positive experiences you have the more likely you will have less anxiety.

why not say, i came to be with you and not to eat. it might dazzle them!

lots of luck

I'm sooo proud of myself!!!!,guys I made it to my best friend's house warming party!!!! I had a real good time!!!!,I thank my Lord for getting me all the way there!!! I made sure I got up real early so I can go to my usual bathroom rutine.I was worried about the day and night before cause of what I ate.Worrying I may pay for it on Saturday the day of her house warming. The trips to my bathroom were not so bad went several times but for like cat like stools I really hate those!!!! It's less messy when their like that,I planned on leaving around 5:30 making sure I give myself plenty of time to get myself together to leave and make my way there. My best friend was supposed to pick me up but she had a lot of things to do to get ready for her party. So I ended up taking the train and bus it was a long commute, but I knew it should not be that bad but I was filled with soo much anxiety!!!! Before leaving my apartment I had several bathroom checks just to make sure I did not need to have any more bms.So on the trip to my friends I would not need to make a detour to find a rest room out in public to do so.I finally left my place around 5;30ish and the whole way was talking to myself say your going to be ok dont worry relax.I made it to the train station got on the train and the rest of the trip was talking to myself calling out the name of Jesus and reading a book of scriptures on my ride LOL!!!

So I made it to my last stop on the train oh!! and before that one of the train stops were having construction work done on them.So there was a detour to get on shuttle busses to make the rest of the way.I was feeling nervous about that too but was able to relax and enjoy the ride there. So got to my final stop on the train got on the bus to my friend's got off got a bit losts and one of her friend's came to get me which I knew.Got there she was sooo happy to see me and happy I made it.I was sooo proud of myself!!! Once I got there I felt at home not a big crowd I was the only guy but that was ok.I knew a couple of people ther already. Then I had a few drinks and was able to relax and engage in conversations laughed and smiled a lot.I had a real good time there was a lot of food did not eat one bite afraid of problems starting did not want to take that risk.I was salivating at all the good food!!! There was lasanya, fried pork,Italian meatballs, chicken wings, rice, fruit, salad.I did take a big plate home but you know once I got home I grubbed dooowna!!!,LOL!!! I was sooo happy I was there I needed that just to laugh and enjoy good company.I hope there will be more nights like that!!! My best friend was sooo happy to I made it and proud of me to and I'm sooo thankful to God that he helped me to get there!!!! smilewinkgrin

See, I knew you could do it and you did. So proud of you jt! I'm sure it was quite tempting to eat but again, so proud that you didn't.

Thanks for the update. I honestly thought of you several times last night, hoping and praying you went to the party AND that you were enjoying yourself.

Hi. Im new to the site and I just read your thread. Im really glad that you made it to the party! You said that you were very relaxed on the way to the party and I was wondering if you do anything special when you travel?

I often listen to music. Specifically Jazz, Country, or Hip Hop depending on what i need at the moment. Jazz if i am too wound up and worried, Country and Hip Hop if i want to sing along for a distraction. Sometimes I just try to meditate if i do not have access to my mp3 player or car radio. Does anyone else do this or can you tell me what you do to keep yourself calm?
